Meet Chrissy Mathews of Studio C in Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chrissy Mathews.

So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
The earliest memory I have of wanting to become a hairstylist was when I was thirteen years old. I had always enjoyed visiting my hairstylist. She was self-employed and we followed her anytime she would move locations. I loved the relationship that grew between us and she stayed my hairstylist all through high school.

Not only did I enjoy the time spent with her, but I always admired she worked her hours around family events. I knew that was something I wanted to be able to do when I started my own family.

I also saw the opportunity where I could connect with people and create strong relationships. Even better, getting to create something that made someone feel happy.

Fast forward to 2009, my senior year in high school. I started as a shampoo technician at a local salon in Aledo, TX. I wanted to get a feel of working in a salon setting before I decided to enroll in cosmetology school. It didn’t take long for me to fall in love.

Only two months after graduating high school, I was attending cosmetology school full time.

After graduating, I worked corporate and privately owned salons for six years. In 2017, I decided it was time for me to have my own salon, which has brought me to where I am today.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
At times, the road was a little bumpy. I got in my own way a lot. Early in my career and being young, I often acted on emotion. Which meant moving to different salons frequently. That made it difficult for me to get a solid foundation and build a clientele in one location.

Please tell us about Studio C – what should we know?
My business is Studio C. I am a hairstylist, and I create styles that help people see their natural beauty. I specialize in haircuts, blowouts, and curly hair.

I’m proud to give my guests styles they can wear day to day and recreate themselves at home. You shouldn’t have to only love your hair after you leave the salon. I love to teach techniques on how to replicate what I do in the salon chair.

I aim to use all-natural products. Becoming more aware of safe and toxin-free beauty care is very important to me. Not only for myself but also for my guests and the environment.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I’d have to give credit to my stylist Andrea Newman that took care of me when I was younger. If it wasn’t for her and how she conducted her business, I’m not sure if the spark would have been lit as early as it was. I’m very thankful for that.

When I first started seeking information on how to become self-employed, I reached out to her for suggestions or guidance. I was so grateful for her warm embrace and encouragement.

Also, my parents. I was always encouraged to seek a college degree but, when I approached them with the idea of cosmetology school, they welcomed it and supported me. They have cheered me on every step of the way and still do today.

To my fiance Michael, thank you for being so encouraging, seeing my potential and what I’m capable of, even when I couldn’t see it, and making sure that I always see it. Not just in my career but in life. Thank you for lifting me up and helping me grow. Thank you for your continued support and help with my Salon Studio and business, we have truly put our sweat, tears, and love into it and I am so proud. Love you dearly!
