Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Turner.
Tyler, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Before I knew what mental illness was, I struggled with it. My story started at age 10 after a major life transition that catapulted me into a deep depression. As I grew older, there would be weeks that I just “didn’t care to function,” but didn’t know why until I began to study the psychology of the mind. From there, I began to understand not only what was affecting me, but also other members of my family and within the black community. Going into college I studied in detail just how human behavior is affected so much by the way we feel and by the traumas or circumstances we endure. Since then, it has been my goal to broaden the knowledge of mental health and guide each person I encounter through their own personal journey of strengthening their mental health.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not always been smooth, but the journey has been well worth it. As a mental health professional, the first and most continuous thing we are taught to do in grad school is “deal with yourself.” This ultimately means we must continuously be working through our own traumas, biases, or any other internal shit that may affect our ability to be healers. So, for two and a half years, I had to really sit with myself. That was tough, but it has taught me to reflect and always look inward. It has made me the strong clinician that I am now.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Mental Wealth Tea story. Tell us more about the business.
Mental Wealth Tea started as an Instagram page I created to offer thought-provoking posts. The idea was to have people see that our minds are the most valuable assets that we’ll ever have and that asset must be protected and maintained at all costs. Once I became licensed, it blossomed into a website where Individuals may have direct access to me and my mental health services. My services include: individual, couples, and family therapy. I see people for a variety of mental health-related issues: anxiety, stress, depression, family conflict, trauma, relationship issues, self- esteem issues, sexual concerns, boundary setting, building trust, effective communicating, co-parenting, and the general “stuck” feeling. There is no “one size fits all” way to approach life or any of these dilemmas. Knowing that I like to take a very real and relatable approach for each person who comes to me seeking help.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Over the next 5- 10 years, I intend to spread the knowledge of the importance of mental health across the US. I know that those who may need my help the most aren’t always the ones who come to me. So, I plan to take Mental Wealth Tea to schools, homeless shelters, Boys and Girls Clubs, but mainly, further into minority communities.
