Today we’d like to introduce you to Colby Lewis.
Colby, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails. Proverbs 19:21. When entering college, my plans was to become a lawyer, yet when graduation college an attorney just seem too out of reach. I graduated from college and began working at a call center. A lady by the name of Sis.Long asked if I could help work with the youth at our church, I agreed and found a passion for youth that I didn’t know I had. This resulted in me shifting careers and actually becoming a full-time teacher. When beginning my teaching career, I knew being an average teacher was not in my vision. I noticed my students could recite every song on the radio but lacked knowledge of things they needed to be successful in class. I decided to incorporate music in their everyday learning routine, were once students heard songs on the radio they immediately sang the mathematical version rather than the actual version of the song. I noticed the student’s scores begin the progress, and also helped with some student’s social skills as well. Not only did I notice, others noticed as well to where Channel 8 news did a segment over my classroom environment which also aired on Good Morning America as well. This led to MrLewToYou providing academic services through creating songs for teachers, as well as begin tutoring students grades Kinder -8th grade in Mathematics.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This has definitely not been an easy process for creating this business. The reason I chose to do this as a business is that I truly care about our youth succeeding, especially in the urban areas in which I work. I learned quickly having a passion for teaching can only get you so far, you still have to master the credentials that required. It has been tough trying to pass the test, which causes me to make less pay than normal educators, but I do not let the money define how much I put into my students. Also, having the opportunity to personally tutor students, is fulfilling but having the struggle of parents not wanting to invest in their child’s education cause sometimes put the tutoring business to the back-burner. I told myself it’s not about me, it’s about our youth and that constantly keeps me motivated to continue with what I’m doing.
Please tell us about MrLew ToYou.
With MrLewToYou, I provide energetic services to students, parents, and other teachers. The way I provide services to students is through tutoring. Taking a different energetic approach to their learning that is totally different than what they are used to in class. I make sure that students are learning, but also earning based on things that interest them. I help students build their confidence in mathematics, and teach different strategies they could use in class. Services that are provided with parents is easier ways to help teach their child while at home and create songs they can use at home to help with the students learning. Finally, with teachers, I provide creative songs that pertain to the lesson the teacher is teaching, that relates to the student but helps drive their learning.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I definitely would have gone to school for education, this would have prepared me more for the test that has to be taken. I also would adhere to the parents a little more to help get parents more involved in the students learning.
