Meet Tony Hudson of DJ Tone in North Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tony Hudson.

Tony, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It all started when I first heard The Roots back in 1995. The first track was called “what they do” It was a cultural depiction of what early 90’s rap life was like but told from a satire perspective. The sound engulfed me and made me a fan of all things hip hop. I then began learning about classic hip-hop artists from back in the day and the rest is history. A family member came in playing some down south rappers called UGK and I heard the scratches in the music and wanted to make tracks that sounded like they never ended. So I later began life and put music off for a while to focus on becoming an adult like most when growing up.

One night I was with my brother after a long late-night partying and we just sat at the table playing tracks back to back off of YouTube and Itunes. I knew if I could mix these together without turntables and and a mixer, then with would be great. I then began my journey in 2011.

I started with doing house parties and birthdays and moved on to weddings and larger productions.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not a smooth road at all. It’s all about what you put into it. The more you practice and develop your craft,  the only thing  you have to worry about on performance day is what shoes go with my outfit. There are tons of DJs in DFW but only a few that get the radio play or events faithfully. So you must be able to set yourself apart from the rest by playing the music that everyone likes or defining your sound. Making it happen consistently is key.

DJ Tone – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
DJ Tone is a mobile Dj business that travels all around the DFW area and performs at birthday parties, weddings, back yard get-togethers, wedding receptions, you name it. I specialize in current hip-hop, top 40 and old school feel-good music, which includes soul, rnb, and motown. I also make personal mixes for working out and have clean music across all generations, so that all feel welcomed and invited to participate and kick it.

I am most proud of how far the business has come within one year. I went from 1 to 2 events a month to 6-9 a month. The things that set me apart from most Dj’s is the personal attention that I take when speaking with clients and really becoming involved with what they are wanting. Whether it be a special need after the event or giving that extra attention on your special day. Sometimes it’s special attention that goes missed that you don’t even know you needed. That’s what I provided and that’s what’s needed sometimes. I’m the last thing you should be worried about on event day.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Rocking a 60th birthday party that I was selected for the last minute. It sometimes preparing for events weeks in advance for clients that are large scale. I had two days to get ready for this and Sometimes as a DJ you take a gig in fear of not sometimes having one, but this one was special for a family friend. I never saw the event space, nor meet the client and ended up rocking it. Even helped correct a visual issue that had nothing to do with me, but had my intuitive skills for making a special slide show come to life with a little rigging at the last minute. The client loved it and I practically saved the day as this was a projector issue that only had visual and no sound. So trying to hook those things up when your at a venue that you don’t know the ends and outs of is sometimes an issue.
