Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Roy.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Danielle. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
When I first started out on my journey as a Salon Professional, my mom was the one who originally convinced me to go to school for it. Both her and my grandma do hair as well! I got through school (barely lol), and tried to work at the salon at Ulta. I was so intimidated and discouraged, fresh out of school and in a very cut-throat environment… no one even wanted to help me find the color book. I was so upset I quit doing hair for about a year! I then dipped my toe back into the hair world by getting a job at drybar. I spent a few years there, again, a very cutthroat environment and wasn’t fitting in with the girls do I decided to switch around again. I have worked at so many salons to try to find a place where I felt comfortable and finally after almost five years of bouncing around from place to place… I have finally found HOME! In my awesome salon suites with stylists who feel like family. The amount of support and positivity from my fellow stylists has been so reassuring that I’m in the right place!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
School was always a big struggle for me! My mom actually went to cosmetology school with me so I wouldn’t drop out. I’m so thankful for her because in such a hard time in my life when I didn’t know what to do with my life, she gave me the greatest gift that she ever could… a career. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else in life. I would be so lost. My struggles didn’t end there, my parents moved away soon after we graduated school. I didn’t have the option to go apprentice under someone at an amazing top salon. I had to make enough to pay my rent and everything else that comes with life. I’ve gone from blowout salons to commission salons, to booth rental, and now to my own suite! Getting to my own suite was not by choice either. I’ve always had problems with coworkers. I do better when I don’t get to close to people. Which makes me sad because I love talking to everyone!
The most recent salon I was at, I was kicked out of due to the owners boyfriend. I was forced to cancel my client that had just walked in, I was yelled at and ridiculed in front of the other girls that worked there. And I was left with nothing. I immediately got into the suite, with no furniture and not knowing what being in a suite was like. It was a huge struggle for me. I couldn’t even believe someone I saw as a big sister/mentor could do that to me, I felt betrayed, so going into this new place was hard. I didn’t want to talk to anyone or become friends with the other stylists because I was scared something would go wrong, and I would end up with problems once again. Thankfully, that hasn’t been the case. My fellow stylists are all so positive and loving! It made all of the struggle worth it! My suite is still getting set up, but little by little it is becoming my dream salon.
D-Royz Designs – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I want my salon to be known as a safe zone. I want all of my clients to be able to come in, get some great color or cuts done, and be able to de stress. The world is hard enough! My clients can tell me as little or as much as they want! I just want to be there for them, we all just need someone to vent to sometimes. I specialize in blonde/balayages! I’m most proud of how my clients are my friends! I’m proud that I can be at least one positive experience they have in their day! And they’re my positive as well! I have the best clients/friends! They have been there for me through my transition into my own suite. I will always go the extra mile for them because they always go the extra mile for me! And that’s what sets me apart. I treat them and pamper them EXACTLY how I would want to be treated when I go get a service done. I will always go above and beyond for my current/future clients!
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Getting to fill out this questionnaire has honestly been my proudest moment. I’m proud that my work is getting noticed and speaking for itself. I love getting to share my love for hair w/ everyone. It makes me so happy. I’m not just doing a balayage or a hair treatment. I’m putting love into each and every one of my client’s hair. They get 110% from me every time.
