Meet Amy Lewis of Legacy Chiropractic and Sports Medicine in North Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Lewis.

Amy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My chiropractic journey started when I was in high school. As an active high school athlete, I routinely saw my chiropractor, who helped keep me feeling good and performing my best. Senior year, however, I started experiencing pain in my leg. It started off pretty mild, but as I continued to try and play on it, it eventually got to the point of feeling like I was being stabbed with an ice pick every time I took a step. I spent months being referred for X-rays and MRIs, going from one orthopedic doctor to pain management specialists all over the state but finding no relief. Finally, in my chiropractor’s office one day, I told him what was going on. He adjusted my leg—and immediately, I was 95% better! I was still a little sore from the joint having been out of place for so long, but I could walk again with no pain. I was amazed as at that time, I thought of chiropractors as “back and neck docs.” I had no idea they also worked with extremities. I had been planning to attend medical school and wanted to go into surgery, but that one appointment made such a positive impact on my life, I knew I needed to look further into this profession.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It most definitely has not always been a smooth road. The first doctor I worked for got in legal trouble and sold our office to another doctor. The new doc didn’t honor the original contract I had and left me seeking a new position elsewhere. So, I started a new job, and soon I had a falling-out with that office. This left me seeking yet another new office to be able to start seeing patients immediately. I called my attorney on a Friday to ask about my options, then met with them on Monday. They took me to a networking event on Tuesday where I met someone who knew of office space, was going Wednesday to see the office, and was signing a lease on Thursday. Meanwhile, I was seeing existing patients who had already been scheduled out of the lobby of one of the bodybuilding gyms I worked with. I didn’t have time to think about writing a business plan or what would happen if I failed. My only prep was meeting with a friend who helped me come up with a company name; then we drew up a logo on a bar napkin—and off I went. I signed a month-to-month lease, bought an adjusting table, and had my attorney draw up the paperwork to make it all legal. I think I would have been much too scared to venture out on my own if I’d had the time to think it all through

Please tell us about Legacy Chiropractic and Sports Medicine.
We are a health and wellness company. We strive to help people find answers when they might otherwise feel helpless. I love working with athletes at all levels but would have to say I find the most joy in working with youthful patients, young athletes, and new moms. As a new mom myself, I understand! Pregnancy and the birthing process take a toll on the body, followed by the aches and pains that come with having a new baby that you are either carrying around or playing the part of a jungle gym!

We help with everything from treating the weekend warrior to working with the professional-level athlete to offering postpartum rehab programs. We practice chiropractic, of course—but more than that, we focus on the body as a whole and take a deep look into the whys behind the problems a patient is presenting. Pain and dysfunction are symptoms of a problem occurring within the body.

I think what sets us apart is the time and focus we spend on each patient. No two patient treatment plans are the same. In short, we are very patient-oriented.

Where do you see your industry going over the next 5-10 years? Any big shifts, changes, trends, etc.?
I see our profession continuing to thrive and grow. These days, so many people are seriously looking for answers to their health problems rather than simply sitting back and settling for treating symptoms.

I see more and more clients that are starting to question what health really is. They’re no longer settling for what the medical model has told them for years: that this is just part of the “aging” process. They are waking up and coming to understand that they don’t have to live with the aches, pains, and ailments such as the autoimmune disorders that are so rampant in our current culture. As an increasing number of people realize the fact that if the prescription worked, they wouldn’t need a refill, they are starting to seek other options. People are recognizing that when we work together to improve nutrition and restore the alignment of the body, we remove the interference in the nervous system. The body was made to heal itself… so long as there is no interference.
