Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristen Price.
Kristen, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My interest in real estate began several years ago when my then-husband and I sold our very first home. The Realtor that represented us asked the question if I ever thought about a career in real estate? My reply was no, why do you ask? She then proceeded to tell me that I was a great communicator and that she thought I would be great at it. I thanked her and thought no more about it until years later after we had moved into our new home. While checking the mail on one day, there was a booklet that came with classes that were being offered in the area. I thumbed through the pages and there were real estate classes that were being offered. I called the telephone number to inquire about the cost and registered for my very first Principles 1 class in real estate and the rest is history.
On my very first night of class, I knew right away that this was what I wanted to do full time. I began preparing financially and informed my then-husband that I was going to leave my full-time job of 10 years and do real estate full time. In 2004, I left my career in Property and Casualty insurance and started my journey in real estate. I started with a well known reputable company that is nationally known and I remained with a reputable company for four years. One day while working, I decided it was time for a raise and I wanted my own independent brokerage. I met the qualifications to become a Broker, applied for my Broker’s License, took the Broker’s exam passed it and birth Hylton Homes Realty, LLC. Hylton Homes Realty is an independent residential real estate brokerage. We handle all aspects of residential real estate with the exception of property management. I have a reputable source for referrals of property management services. If you or someone you know is interested in buying, selling, investing or leasing a property we’re here to help. Give us a call.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not always been easy. As with any business, there are some good days and some not so good days. The year 2015, I lost my Aunt Deloris Murphy who was one of my sales agents to colon cancer. This loss nearly broke me down emotionally. We were very close and to watch her have to give up something that she enjoyed doing so much and that brought her so much joy and blessings financially was difficult for me. Not long after losing her, one of my other sales agents decided to get out of the business of real estate altogether. I found myself struggling to attract and keep good talent. After all, I am just a small independent brokerage who didn’t have much to offer and not a huge surplus of financial assets to pull from. I did not want to take out a loan from a financial institution to fund my company. I could have done this but instead, I chose to build my company with my own resources. Competing with other brokerages was challenging. That’s when I decided to enlarge my territory and seek out other avenues to utilize my education, knowledge and experiences in real estate. As of 2017, I became a Texas Realtor Instructor. I now teach, train and educate new realtors on how to build a successful real estate business. All while still actively representing buyers, sellers and investors with their real estate (buying, selling) transactions.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I pride my business model on integrity and the Golden Rule. Do the right thing when no one is looking and treat people like you want to be treated. I specialize in working with all types of buyers and sellers. There are no two clients that are alike. Everybody is different as well as their situation. There is no one size fits all. I cater my buyer and seller consultation meetings around the needs of my clients. If my client is considered a HOT client and is ready at the very moment that we are in contact with each other to transact business then that is what I do. If my client is not a HOT client but a client that I have to date/court a little while to get them to that point then I do that as well. I initially got into the business to help anyone and everyone that had the desire to own a home one day especially those that look like me accomplish just that. As a company, I am most proud of our ability to explain, educate, guide and share in the experience of homeownership with so many different families. Our personal touch sets us apart from others because of our genuine love for what we do. By the time we are headed to closing, our clients are like family. We have spent so much time together (30-45 days) and shared so many stories, testimonies with each other that they are our family, not just a client but FAMILY! We build lasting relationships!
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was a good kid. I was known as a tomboy. I enjoyed playing outside and being very competitive. I was smart. I always have been about handling my business in the classroom and in extracurricular activities. I grew up in a single-parent home for many years. My mother raised my brother and I and he helped her with me as I am the baby. I’ve always been very outgoing and outspoken. As a child, I thought of becoming a doctor. It was nothing more than just a thought (laughing). A Dallas native, born and raised here all of my life. I played volleyball, ran track and was a cheerleader during my secondary school years. I attended Wilmer-Hutchins High School and graduated with honors in 1985. I went on to attend college at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas for four years and received my BBA – Bachelor of Business Administration in Administrative Management in 1989. In 2000 I graduated with my MSHR&B -Master of Science Degree in Human Relations and Business from Amberton University in Garland, Texas.
