Today we’d like to introduce you to Esther Frederick.
Esther, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always been creative and artistic and I was pretty young when photography became one of my favorite mediums. The camera quickly became an extension of my eye, and photography, an extension of my heart. It’s actually hard to remember when photography wasn’t a part of my life! It didn’t take long for me to discover that portraits were my favorite as I loved the whole process of interacting with my subject and capturing all of their little nuances. I actually only considered photography as a “serious hobby” for a while, then I finally realized my dreams could be a reality.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’d say anything worthwhile takes hard work and definitely dedication to keep going when the road isn’t smooth. It’s just deciding if what you’re doing is worth the hard parts that come with it, and it always, always, always is for me. Creating work I love and connecting with people not only makes my heart happy but fulfills my soul. It’s such an honor to be invited into someone’s story and to be trusted to capture their memories. There’s absolutely nothing like it.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am a fine art film photographer of weddings, elopements, portraits, and editorials. Though I’m based in Fort Worth, I’m an avid traveler and love to fly to beautiful locations for destination weddings and adventure sessions — it’s so exciting to see the next place my job will take me! By combining natural light and attentiveness to details with an intentional and thoughtful approach, my work is luminous, timeless, and romantic. It’s a priority to help couples feel comfortable in front of my camera, and I’m often told that my work looks peaceful and has a candid quality, which is a huge compliment since I actually give lots of direction to achieve that look. I love to celebrate with my couples and to hear their stories — how they met, the proposal, the meaningful touches included on their wedding day — it brings me such joy!
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
God has given me an incredibly supportive family and friends. They encourage me as they listen to me talk about my goals and tell me frequently that they believe in me and they know I can do anything, as well as reminding me to rest and take care of myself.
I also had a wonderfully sweet client and now friend, message me before her actual session that she admired my work and that I’d have a forever fan in her. Her kind words still warm my heart and since we met, she’s continued to be a great encouragement and has referred me to her friends.
Last summer, I invested in a 1:1 workshop with Kerry Jeanne Photography and I’m proud to say I was her first official mentee. She is an amazing person and photographer and it is a blessing to know and learn from her.
