Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanessa Michelle.
Vanessa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I became interested in hair at a pretty young age, maybe around 12 years old and like most started practicing on myself and my siblings. My mom was my biggest supporter and encouraged me to go to beauty school rather than a university out of high school but I was convinced it was just a hobby. I later came to my senses and went to beauty school in 2016 and graduated in 2017 from Ogle 55. I have since worked on and off independently and with salons, continuing my education through the salons and on my own making sure I stay well informed, knowledgeable and up to date on trends.
The last salon I was a part of I worked with a group of very talented and amazing women and although I am very grateful for the connections made there I realized my vision was very different and wanted to do something different with my skill set. Seeing hair more as a piece of art, myself and two other stylists joined together to start our independent mini salon. Mine being The Cos For The Cause, working with all types of hair mostly creating blondes, vivids, haircuts and about ninety percent being major transformations, although in my and my client’s eyes even a root retouch can be a major transformation.
Since I started this journey of deciding to become a cosmetologist to becoming an entrepreneur I have learned a lot about hair, people and business, as well as connecting with some amazing human beings and building on the relationships I had before this journey began and that keeps me motivated.
Has it been a smooth road?
Absolutely not, but like the saying goes nothing worth having comes easy. In a world where social media is very present and convenient, it can sometimes be difficult to keep up as a one-man show. Also as a mother and business owner having to be on call 24/7 for both can be chaotic every once in a while but with my support system very much manageable and easy going for the most part.
Most of my struggles have stemmed from not setting and keeping boundaries, which I have worked on tremendously since I became a licensed cosmetologist and currently still working on but have definitely seen the benefits and feel way more organized by dedicating workdays for emails, texts, social media, etc. and off days for my family, friends and myself.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Cos For The Cause – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
My brand The Cos For The Cause I created in 2017 with a big vision I hope to execute very soon, but it started with my love to help others especially through volunteering which is something I have done on and off since I was 13 years old and continue to do now. Never letting go of the bigger picture, I specialize in major transformations with blondes and vivids making me known as the stylist that creates “the cool hair”.
What I am most proud of is the ability to create a safe space for everyone and making them feel good about themselves even if it is a “non-transformational” service, they are able to confide in me and have a therapy session if needed or share some exciting news. I am also very proud and happy to be able to give back, it may not be every day as this is my career and way of living but to be able to give someone that attention and care are so rewarding and I feel like everyone deserves the full-service salon experience no matter what.
My energy and vibe set me apart from others, I genuinely love people and am definitely the person you can call in the middle of the night for anything and I am there. My clients are all over the metroplex and even out of state and I definitely believe they come back because of the safe space I have created for them to feel completely comfortable to be themselves. I also educate each of my clients based on their hair type, the necessary maintenance and their water type (hard or soft water) and this is for every appointment to ensure they maintain that amazing mane and get their money worth until their next appointment.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The diversity, I meet people from all over the world with many different backgrounds now since we all know everyone comes to Dallas for the many opportunities here, I also love that there is so much to do, there are many options in parks, restaurants, theaters and just anything entertainment-wise.
My least favorite thing is the traffic especially when the fair is open aside from all of the construction constantly going on.
