Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey Meyers and Daniel Washburn.
One day in the Spring of 2018, after months of talking about their shared love for tiny homes, Daniel took Kelsey to see the small cedar frame he had constructed a few years prior. It was originally intended to be sold as a simple cabin for a deer lease, but life got in the way and the project never went beyond the framing stage. Kelsey was immediately smitten and began drafting designs to turn the space into a cozy vacation rental getaway. They strapped the frame to a truck and relocated it 4 miles away on Daniel’s property – several acres in the countryside with a lovely view of a private pond. Over the next eight months they built the tiny cabin by hand and in March of 2019 welcomed the first guests.
Has it been a smooth road?
Despite its tiny size, this project was no small undertaking and as with anything in life, we certainly had our challenges along the way. Working closely with another person to complete a task has a way of amplifying your differences when it comes to communication style and decision making. You learn an enormous amount about yourself and each other, making it that much more rewarding when you finally cross that finish line together. We had moments where it seemed that everything that could go wrong did – like our water heater failing within hours of our first guest arrival. But in the end, we always managed to push through our difficulties and couldn’t be more pleased with what we’ve been able to achieve. Overall our guests have been fantastic and being able to share this piece of ourselves has been more rewarding than we could have imagined.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Redstar cabin is a tiny home vacation rental about a 40-minute drive from central Dallas in Terrell, TX. The 250 sq cabin is built with locally milled cedar and nestled in the woods overlooking a private pond. Booking is available through Airbnb or VRBO. The space offers a wall of windows, a beautiful vaulted ceiling, a Queen bed in the sleeping loft, a full bathroom and kitchenette with mini-fridge, hot plate and microwave. We designed, built and manage the property ourselves and drew on our combined experiences to create what we hoped would be the perfect home away from home. Kelsey has a background in real estate, leasing and property management, while Daniel owns a construction company and built his own home with little outside help. We drew inspiration from other unique vacation rentals we have stayed in while traveling around Texas. We are proud to offer a unique, curated space where our guests can unwind from their busy lives and reconnect with nature while getting a taste of the tiny home lifestyle.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
So far we are thrilled with the response we have received. The DFW area seems to have no shortage of individuals who appreciate the experience we aim to provide. We have hosted guests celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, engagements and newlyweds. We feel that our concept would work well in any scenic area that is within an hour or so drive of a major metropolitan area, especially an area with natural attractions or seasonal activities. The more Dallas grows and becomes densely populated, the more we see a need to get away from it all with a local “staycation” experience.
