Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Johnson.
Kevin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My career began in 1996 as a cook for the US Navy onboard the USS John F Kennedy (CV-67), where we prepared 25,000 meals a day for all crew members on board the ship. After being honorably discharged from the Navy in Sept 2000, I began my career as a restaurant chef. I began working as a line cook at a few different restaurants that specialized in various cuisines. Then in 2005, I landed my first head chef position for Bonefish Grill in Winston Salem N.C.
A year and half later I decided I needed a change of scenery, so we packed up and moved to Texas. Once in Texas, I began working in various restaurants and even as a pastry chef for a bakery. Then in May 2008, I began working for a Globe Life Insurance company as the Executive Chef where I have been for the last 11 years. During my time at Globe Life, I started a catering company called Culinary Affairs by Chef Kevin in 2013, which has now been rebranded to Taste by Chef Kevin.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Nothing about the service industry is a smooth road. Everyday is a different challenge. We work all Holiday and every weekend. Being sick is not enough when you are the Head Chef. You miss all the important day with your family and friends. At the end of the day, you have to love what you do or you will not make in this business.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Taste by Chef Kevin – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
My company specializes in catering, personal chef services, weddings, and special events.
I am most proud of the growth of my company is such a competitive market.
What sets my company apart from others is my ability with both culinary and pastry arts.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My plans are to continue growing my catering company and eventually opening an event venue with my wife Nicole and her company Nicole Smedley Events.
