Today we’d like to introduce you to John Young.
John, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Alkeys was launched in 2018 by eight close friends, who, in collaboration with our head chef, based our menu on the idea that bar food should be fresh, delicious and just as important as the quality of the drinks the bartenders serve. We created an environment that we enjoy with a relaxed vibe, great service, plenty of flat screens to catch the games, live music on the weekends, trivia, board games, corn hole, Jenga, shuffleboard, darts and billiards. We are the go-to place in Lewisville to celebrate birthdays, holidays and special events. Located directly behind the Wayne Ferguson Plaza on Main Street, we strive to remain Old Town Lewisville’s favorite neighborhood gastropub.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The City of Lewisville has been very supportive of Alkeys being an integral part of Old Town’s Main and Mill district and has been great to work with helping to define Main & Mill as a nightlife destination. Since Old Town’s revitalization is still in progress (culminating in 2025 for Lewisville’s 100th anniversary) many people still don’t know about all the great dining, drinking and shopping available. Our biggest struggle continues to be getting the word out that Alkeys is open for lunch and dinner daily and brunch on the weekends. We need people to know that Old Town is a vibrate place with a truly unique sense of history and community and Alkeys, the best gastropub in the metroplex, is nestled right in the middle of the Main and Mill District.
Please tell us about your business.
Alkeys is the best watering hole and eatery in the DFW area! We serve lunch and dinner daily and have an incredible brunch on the weekends. In addition to delicious food and drinks, we furnish darts, shuffle board, corn hole, Jenga, board games, cards and dominoes daily. We offer rock painting and Geeks Who Drink trivia every Wednesday and live music every weekend. We are actively involved in the Lewisville community and are known for throwing excellent parties for New Years, St. Patrick’s Day, Halloween and Drinks-giving. Come to Alkeys and soak up our laid-back, local, fun-loving vibe and enjoy our appetizing food and drinks.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I come from a family of incredible cooks. My aunt was the cook for Buckner’s Children’s Home where my mother grew up. My Mom was a ridiculously talented cook as well. She somehow managed to grow her vegetables, cook for our family and earn extra money cooking for other families in our neighborhood in addition to raising me and my four siblings. While most of the cooking growing up was done by the women in our family, I decided that the kitchen could be a good place for a man too. I am very blessed to be raised by a father who let me pursue my passions and a mother who was always willing to teach. This is where my love of food, restaurants and entertaining was born.
