Meet Lauren Swan of The Daily Wine Pour

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Swan.

Lauren, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I sold wine for three years when I first graduated college. While I loved the job and I love good wine, it is more of a hobby and not a total lifestyle I want to live.

Over the years, when people find out I sold wine they would ask for suggestions on everyday wine that they could buy and drink at home. I was constantly making list of wines for people or on the phone with them while they were standing in the grocery store. Friends kept saying I needed to start something…but nothing really came to mind until a friend’s birthday this past year.

Long story short, the birthday dinner involved someone ordering a bottle of wine (this is where I should have checked the menu but I didn’t because I was ordering something different) that was incredibly overpriced and honestly didn’t need to be on the menu given the cuisine served in the restaurant. I ended up having to pay a significant amount for wine I did not partake in and I was livid. I was driving around for my actual 9 to 5 stewing and thinking. After coming up with an idea and doing some research, I realized there aren’t a lot of bloggers out there focused on every day drinking wines.

What I found was a community of bloggers who put a lot of value on the more expensive bottles, bottles that people would take to a home for a nicer get together or give as a gift to someone and not the Tuesday night I’m in pajamas watching tv and want a glass of wine. They also really focus on themselves. I felt there is a gap in the every day drinking wines but being faceless to help guide the consumer to great quality choices for daily consumption. This was how The Daily Wine Pour was born!

Has it been a smooth road?
No, it has not. I started this in the summer and have really failed this fall to get post done. One, I wasn’t drinking a lot, and it’s hard to post when you aren’t drinking. Also, my 9 to 5 got in the way. Late July – October is the busiest time for me and I just couldn’t juggle both this year. I am currently working on a plan to help me this coming year to get a little more consistent when posting!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
It’s all about the everyday drinking wines but being a faceless guide. Let’s face it, most people don’t want to/can’t afford to buy the $25 bottles every time at the store and prefer good quality wines for lower cost through the week. The brand focuses on those people. I want to help guide them through the wine aisles with ease and to help build their knowledge so they can buy wines and be confident in their choices.

Wine is also subjective. What I like, you might not like and vice versa. There is nothing wrong with this! Everyone’s palette is different and I want people to follow along and learn but they don’t necessarily need to know what my face looks like.

And honesty is part of the game for me. While I don’t want to offend winemakers, I want to tell people why I wasn’t a fan of the wine or why I am a fan of the wine. There’s no point to lie to people to tell them that you love the wine when in reality you would never purchase the wine and the wine lacked body/depth/finish, etc. And as a consumer, what I don’t like, you might like and that might be a great selection for you.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
YES! Dallas was voted number 1 in the restaurant industry in 2019 so people are out eating and probably drinking. I hope that as I grow and people follow along, I can help teach them more about what they are reading when out so they can make knowledgeable choices without relying on a waitstaff decision.

Also, there are a lot of vineyards around DFW. I hope to explore these and show what there is to offer for weekend activities.
