Meet Lisa Pruett

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Pruett.

Lisa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a board-certified dermatologist practicing in North Dallas. About two years ago my business partner who is also a dermatologist and I started our journey with solwearMD. We saw a hole in the market for a sun protective clothing item that women could wear as their go to accessory to protect their shoulders chest back and arms from the sun without having to wear sunscreen and keep reapplying it throughout the day. We recognized that there was a lack of UPF rated coverups for women that weren’t just rash guards that most women find to be unappealing, uncomfortable and unflattering. As practicing dermatologists, we understand and see firsthand the long-term damage that the sun does to our skin over time. We know that one out of every five Americans will develop skin cancer at some point in their lifetime. And we know that 90% of the aging of our skin is from the sun. So we created a patent pending design that is a versatile accessory that you can wear five different ways to throw on and protect you when you need it, whether you’re at the pool, on vacation or just enjoying the outdoors. We launched our website on small business Saturday in late November.

Has it been a smooth road?
This journey has been an eye-opening experience for both of us. So many challenges along the way that we didn’t anticipate when we first started, but we are learning that this just goes with having a start up business. All the attention to detail such as picking the buttons and finding the perfect fabric and deciding on the packaging and going through this the many versions of our pattern to applying for trademarks and figuring out our website. It has been such A learning experience as we go and we know that with each step there is so much more to learn. But we have been true to why we started solwearMD to begin with. We have not put ourselves on a timeline and we want to grow our business organically and reach as many women as we can to better help them protect their skin from what the sun is doing.

We’d love to hear more about your practice.
I am a practicing board-certified dermatologist at Trinity dermatology which is a part of US dermatology partners in Carrollton Texas. I most enjoy Performing a full body skin exam is on my patients to detect early skin cancers. I also like to educate my patients about how to protect their skin from the sun and how to improve the aging of their skin.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes, I do think that the Dallas area is a great place to start a business. We have so many resources here that have come into play for solwearMD.
