Today we’d like to introduce you to Katrina Gladney.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My love for all things fashion and beauty dates back to when I was a young girl who loved to play dress up in my grandmother’s clothing, shoes and jewelry. At the time I had no interest or desire in starting a fashion business, I just enjoyed being able to use clothes to express myself and make myself look good. As I grew into a woman, the desire grew but I was too scared and rejected the idea because I didn’t take myself seriously or think I was capable. God, however, had other plans. He showed me so many signs and at some point, I could no longer fight it. He was letting me know it’s okay to take the leap of faith and jump into it so that’s exactly what I did! As a result, KATCHē was born.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has been everything but smooth. No one really tells you how hard it truly is to run a business. No one tells you about all the failures and all the no’s. No one tells you about how much money you are going to lose. No one tells you that you will get very little support or clientele in the beginning. However, my advice to myself or anyone else on this journey chasing their dreams is to keep going! This is all part of the process and as cliche, as it sounds consistency is key! You have to keep going when all the odds are against because at some point, things will shift in your favor. I haven’t seen a consistent person fail yet have you? So keep pushing because you got this!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into KATCHē (pronounced catchy) story. Tell us more about the business.
I am the owner and creator of KATCHē, an online women’s clothing boutique defined as “The art of being instantly appealing and memorable; unforgettable.” This is how I define my personal brand/style and I wanted to my business to reflect that same tone. I want my clients to feel this same energy when they get dressed in my pieces. I want them to feel good about themselves. Although I’ve got such a long way to go, I am most proud of the fact that I launched my very own custom collection in my first year in business. I get why a lot of boutiques wait years before tapping into custom pieces but I am proud to say I did it in my first year. I came up with the designs, I handpicked the best quality of fabrics I could find for each piece, I partnered with an out of state manufacturer and I ultimately put it out there for the world to see. It came with a lot of ups and downs but I am proud that I did it. My goal when I launched my business was to offer some exclusivity for my clients that they couldn’t get anywhere else and by all means, it happened!
Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
I feel all our experiences in life mold us into the people we are today so of course, my childhood experiences played a role. Without my past experiences, I wouldn’t know what perseverance means or how to work hard and to not give up. I wouldn’t know how to be self-sufficient.
