Meet Mark Fox of Fox Estate Liquidators in McKinney

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Fox.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was an antique dealer for more than 13 years, worked for auctioneers as a caller and an appraiser for several years. I worked in the printing industry from 1989 and as the world of printing changed and sales dropped I had to look at my options. I had thought for a few years of starting my own estate sale business and made the decision to move forward, I went online and applied for my Tax ID, created my website on Homestead and started putting my name out there. It just so happened that some great friends of mine that had been in the business for over 17 years were going out of the business. They had a garage sale to liquidate their setup and supplies, they had no idea that I had made a decision to start my own business until I went to their garage sale. When I told them they loaded up my vehicle with a ton of stuff and only charged me $40.00 for everything. The next thing they did was refer my first estate sale to me. They were a Godsend as there were so many things I would have never thought of. They worked tirelessly for me helping me clean, stage and price the sale and then worked the two day sale with me. When it came time to pay everyone for their labor they only charged me $1.00, it was amazing. They told me that they felt God had told them to help me with my new adventure and have continued to help in different ways through the past nine years. It has been a lot of very hard work with long hours and seven days a week work but it has all been worth it as I feel I’ve not only built a business for myself but also have been able to help others in their time of need. I have worked to build a business built upon honesty and integrity that is one reason I listed my business on angieslist.com so that anyone and everyone that I deal with can leave a review that I cannot manipulate.

Has it been a smooth road?
There haven’t been too many struggles, they’re small for the most part, finding consistent workers and obtaining sales are some of the difficulties I deal with.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Fox Estate Liquidators story. Tell us more about the business.
I guess I got ahead of myself on some of the above questions. I handle estate sales from the beginning to the end from trashing to staging, appraising, pricing and handling the two to three days of sales. My team and I take great pride that we clean as we go and bring in the supplies needed to setup the sale to make it look like you are walking into a showroom. I know I probably spend too much time making it look as good as I do but it makes me feel better if I do the best job I can do to honor the family and earn the money they are paying me. I feel we are one of the best in how we stage a home and price fairly for the family and the buyers.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The baby boomers are starting to age out and there seem to be new “estate sale” companies pop-up every week. The area is being flooded with sales, anywhere from 40 to 75 sales every weekend which is driving down the prices on just about everything.
