Today we’d like to introduce you to Rochelle Byrd.
Rochelle, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
This started one night in 2008 with me and two of my friends out eating dinner. Not sure how we got on the subject, but we started talking about cupcakes. I have baked since I was a little girl and told them that my dream was to one day own my out Cupcake shop. Originally the name was going to be crazy cakes and I wanted to create cupcakes with all these crazy names! Of course, ideals changed and so did the name.
Has it been a smooth road?
This has defiantly not been a smooth road. There is so much competition out there and so I had to think of something that would set me apart from the rest. I had to create a wow factor. I went through so many notepads, staying up late trying to create the perfect cake in a cup! Some days I would make dozens over and over and throw them in the trash. Using my friends and family as my guinea pigs. But I don’t think they seem to mind.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Real Cup Cake story. Tell us more about the business.
So I am The Real Cup Cake, I bake these cute cakes inside a cup that you eat with a spoon. This ideal was created for several reasons…I don’t like the paper around a cupcake, I hate buying a cupcake get home and it has fallen over inside the box (a cupcake should not require a seatbelt) and sometimes I just like eating half now and saving the other half for later. My cakes in a cup come with a clear plastic lid that can be used for storing and enjoying later. Or maybe even adding a scoop of ice cream!! I’m so proud because this started as a dream, a conversation amongst friends into reality.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I hope to one day have a Cup Cake truck and be able to deliver in the Dallas Fort Worth area. I want people to create chaos for my cupcakes kind of like the Popeyes Chicken Sandwich!
