Meet Mariah Williams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariah Williams.

Mariah, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
When I entered into high school I wanted to be a part of one of the various spirit squads offered there. During my freshman year, I played percussion in the band and did not find that it was my true passion. At the end of my freshman year, I decided to try out for the majorette team. One of my closest friends, who was a member of the team from the previous year, suggested that I try out. I made the team and instantly fell in love with the art of Baton Twirling. I stayed determined in the sport and worked hard to be the best I could possibly be. This year I have been blessed with the opportunity of being the Feature Twirler for my school. In addition to twirling, I am also involved in other organizations such as the Desoto High School Dance Company, Top Teens of America (South Dallas County Chapter), Business Professionals of America (Area 1 Region 2), Desoto Early College High School, and Texas Touch of Class. Being a part of these various organizations have taught me many valuable lessons that I will use in my future. But most importantly, I have learn to not fall into the social norm of society; but to break the status quo and become your own self.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, there were times when I felt like quitting and giving up. Dance and Twirling are both very competitive sports and require a lot of time, energy and dedication. . I would have practices where I would not be performing at my best ability, meanwhile the rest of my teammates would be excelling. I would get frustrated when I could not comprehend a move or trick as well as everyone else. In the end, it only made me a stronger person. I had to step up and face my challenges head on by working twice as hard to reach my goal.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
After graduating high school in 2021 along with my associate’s degree in General Studies, I plan to continue in the sport of twirling for a college/university. I plan to major in either Journalism or Business Marketing. I like both career fields but have not decided on just one yet.
