Today we’d like to introduce you to Fasal Shariff.
Fasal, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am certified public accountant, born and raised in Dallas, Texas. Growing up, my father owned his own business, a textile-manufacturing company, and employed close to 60 people in the 90’s in Dallas.
Throughout high school and university, I worked at my father’s factory and learned the business. After graduating from Plano West Senior High School, I went on to attend Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas. After hard work and meeting the admission requirements, I was accepted into the Cox School of Business at SMU. The Cox School of Business was one of the highest-ranked business schools in the U.S.A. I studied accounting – and as it’s considered the “language of business”, therefore, what better degree could I earn when my plan was to run and expand my father’s business one day. I graduated with my B.B.A. in Accounting in 2006. With my degree in hand, I was employed by a mid-sized firm called BDO Seidman, LLP as an audit associate in September of that year. I worked for BDO from 2006 to 2009 and after deciding I wanted to work for the Big 4, I received a job offer as an audit associate at PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP. While working at PwC, I sat for the CPA exams and passed all of them after intense months of study.
Further, in 2012 I worked for Deloitte & Touche, LLP in Dallas as an audit senior. Finally, in July of 2014, I left to start my own practice called Shariff CPA Firm, P.C. after realizing there was a huge demand for tax, accounting and audit services in my local business community. After working for the Big 4 accounting firms, I wanted to incorporate that experience, professionalism and work ethic into my own practice. The experience I picked up from working at my father’s factory helped tremendously, and his entrepreneur skills taught me how to be a businessman. At the end of the day, it all comes down to how hard and smart you work. You have to hustle to see results. Today, I run my practice out of the Dallas Design District and I have my own accounting staff. I really enjoy what I do, and I believe it is all a blessing.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, but I have learned so much along my journey since starting the firm in 2014. I believe the biggest struggle was that our practice was initially focused on providing just traditional bookkeeping/accounting and tax preparation services and my background was in audit (assurance). Coming from an audit background (which is very different from traditional accounting & tax); I had a steep learning curve to overcome! I worked tirelessly to learn this business. From networking with other CPA’s, attending conferences, watching videos, reading books and blogs; I tried to get my hands on any resource that could help me along the way. However, I believe this was beneficial for me because it forced me to learn the business properly and taught me to value the time that CPA’s spend to provide top-level service to their clients.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
