Today we’d like to introduce you to Britt Redden.
Britt, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
If you had told this starry-eyed Freshman Red Raider (Wreck ‘em Tech!) that she would eventually grow up to become a Criminal Defense Attorney and own, her own law firm and billboard before she was 30…. she’d tell you that you were crazy.
Truth be told I went to Texas Tech to get that MRS. Degree. Luckily, I had a change of heart my junior year and was dead set on going to law school at SMU. Those that know me know I am one of the most stubborn people you’ll ever meet. But arguably, it’s that same – passion, tenacity & determination that make me an exceptional attorney and zealous advocate.
Everyone at SMU was brilliant. I knew I had to lock it down and work four times as hard as anyone else to make it. I kept my head down and continued to grind. Those three years challenged me to my full ability; they were beyond difficult, but they also built new levels of fortitude. I graduated Cum Laude at SMU.
The Bar was the ultimate test of my discipline and mental durability. I told myself if I didn’t pass, I wasn’t meant to be a lawyer. Law school was hard enough. I lived, ate, slept, and breathed Bar Prep. I was relentless, and that effort paid off, as I passed the Bar and proved first to myself, that I had what it took to be a criminal law attorney.
As you might imagine, I wanted to do things my way. I didn’t want to do Big Law. No matter how hard I tried to get excited about numbers and contracts l couldn’t. I couldn’t hide it any longer – Criminal Defense was my passion and everyone at SMU knew it! My favorite response I ever gave to everyone’s favorite question of how I could be a defense Attorney will always be “Jesus was the original public defender. He DIED for your sins.” I’m blessed to have learned early on in life that my calling is Criminal Defense. However, that path to live out that calling was not without obstacles.
After sitting for the Bar, I was hired on with a large scale and outstanding Criminal Defense firm – before I was even licensed. I remember my first day like it was yesterday. I was immediately thrown into the mix. It was fast-paced and challenging. I was given more responsibility than most 3rd year associates on my first day. I was hungry to learn and to do more, and I hustled harder than most. I definitely learned how to sink before I swam. I stayed hungry and kept wanting more. And that hunger, or “stubbornness,” is what led to Redden Law.
My time with that firm was incredible. I am forever grateful for the responsibility, trust and freedom I was given from the start, and the valuable experience I received. It more than prepared me for starting my own firm.
I am so grateful for the Lord’s push September 2018. He knew I was ready to start my own firm, and I put my faith and trust in Him. He did not fail me. These past 15 months have been such a rewarding whirlwind of growth and service to my clients. I am so blessed to have the opportunity to help others, save lives, salvage families, careers and countless others. Because sometimes, bad things happen to good people; and when it does, they need someone to stand with them and fight. And that for me, is the most rewarding aspect of my career as a criminal law attorney.
I am so grateful for amazing colleagues and mentors in law, who push me to my potential as an attorney. My family and friends have supported me and nourished my drive to succeed and open my private law practice.
Reflecting on starting my private practice, as the founder of Redden Law, I am grateful for my experiences and for the chance to serve my community as a defender and advocate. To my clients, thank you for your faith and trust in me. There is no more rewarding career in this world than serving as a criminal law attorney.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’m blessed to have learned early on in life that my calling is Criminal Defense. However, that path to live out that calling was not without obstacles.
SMU career counselors told me “NO” when I said I wanted to go straight into private practice with a Criminal Defense firm. I was told that I had to go work at the District Attorney’s Office. I was laughed at and told no one would hire me. Well of course, this only made me even more determined to prove them wrong. And I did just that! I was last amongst my classmates to gain employment because I wanted to break from the traditional conventions. To this day, SMU Career Center still holds that I am one of the first and only graduates to go straight into criminal defense private practice.
I always knew I would eventually start my own firm, I just didn’t think I would do it as soon as I did. I’ve always said that God has a funny way of pushing you to do something you‘re a little not ready to do. I think that’s how we grow. And it’s in those moments where you learn what you’re made of, and God’s intention for the gifts and talents He has bestowed on you. The tough get tougher and continue to grow and strengthen personally and professionally at an exponential rate. Those breakthroughs make you who you are today and allow you to break through the ceiling of limitations, so that only you define what is possible for you to achieve.
One of the most challenging aspects of having my own practice is that every day is a new day. We are making history each day. When you own your own business you wear multiple hats. When I wake up, I go to court and advocate for clients.
After court, I run the admin department returning phone calls and updating our case management systems and client letters. Then, it’s time to evaluate and discuss current marketing strategies to answer daily question of – “Where are my clients coming from?”
My afternoons are usually split between in-office and phone consultations with potential new clients and existing client meetings. After 5pm, it’s time to review discovery for my pending cases and prep for the next day’s court dockets. And somewhere in the mix I find time to return my Accountant’s phone calls and pay my bills. But each night I go to bed with a smile on my face knowing I am living out my wildest dream and I wouldn’t change it for the world!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Redden Law story. Tell us more about the business.
I am the founding member and owner of Redden Law, PLLC. Based in Dallas, Texas, and also serving surrounding counties in the DFW area, Redden Law is a full-service law firm with a focus on criminal defense at both the State and Federal levels.
As a Trial Attorney, I use my experience in the courtroom to counsel clients with their day to day legal needs as well as represent them at trial. Early on, I realized I possessed a passion for the courtroom and decided to use this drive to advocate for clients whether it is a client’s first DWI, a first-degree assault charge, a complex federal drug conspiracy, or a family violence allegation.
I am most proud of being awarded entry into the National Trial Lawyers: Top 40 under 40″ this past fall. This is a distinguished and professional organization that represents the top trial lawyers from each State, who practice civil plaintiff or criminal defense legal specialties. What this means to me is recognition for the determination, hard work, and results I bring to every criminal case and trial. To be named among the best legal experts in this category, both in Texas and across the United States and recognized for the trial results that I have achieved for my clients, means a great deal to me.
I think one of the most important aspects of being honored by leaders from the legal community is that it assures clients of the integrity and skill that I bring to each criminal law case. The standards to be recognized for this membership are significant, and only the most accomplished Attorneys realize this great honor. It exemplifies hard work, commitment to achieving high-performance results at trial, and I am grateful to my colleagues for nominating me, and The National Trial Lawyers for allowing me to join other distinguished Attorneys across the Nation as a member.
I believe what sets me apart from the rest is my work ethic and drive. When asked, I often tell people that they will likely never find any attorney who will work as hard or be as dedicated as I am.
As a former athlete, I take my tenacity from the field to fight passionately for my clients both inside and outside the courtroom. I understand the emotional and legal stresses that criminal charges entail. I not only step into my clients’ corner to fight for them with fervor, but I am also available to my clients every step of the way to help avoid uncertainty and bring clarity to the process. When clients call, I answer. I return missed calls, emails, and texts. I listen. I console. I inform. I answer questions. I hold hands. I guess you could say I treat my clients as I would want my lawyer to treat me. So far, I’ve had a lot of success following The Golden Rule.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck. I believe in God. As a child of God, I believe in His providence – how He goes before us to orchestrate events in our lives which many times we don’t even understand until years later… sometimes not until we get to heaven.
God is present at all times, and through all circumstances, good and bad and even when tragedy strikes, maybe especially when tragedy strikes, God is at work in my life. God is up to more than what meets the eye. There are no chance meetings, no lucky opportunities. As I look back on my journey that led me here, I can’t help but think, “That wasn’t luck. That was God.”
The road to get to where I am today wasn’t easy and didn’t always make sense. There were triumphs, but also plenty of hard times and tears. There were setbacks, delays, tragedies and detours along the way. Sometimes it was hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. But for every time I sat and questioned God, I’ve looked back and realized He had a plan all along.
I look back and I realize that I am a better person because of those tear-filled difficult times. I couldn’t see it then, but when I look back now, I realize how much of those experiences contribute to who I am today. Through it all, God was at work, orchestrating my life for a grander purpose leading me to where I am today with Redden Law! As Apostle Paul writes in Romans 8:28: “We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God: those who are called according to His purpose.”
