Today we’d like to introduce you to Roland Pollard.
Roland, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
2008 – I was in Geography class and my teacher called me out of class and took me to a cheer practice because I was heavy into lifting weights. I fell in love with the challenges that cheerleading brought along with it, so I pursued the sport.
2010 – After a college coach found a picture of me holding a stunt in the air from a Plano Sr. High game, I was offered a cheerleading scholarship in Tyler, Texas. I ended up taking the offer.
2012 – Moved back to North DFW after I was offered a job coaching competitive cheer in McKinney, Texas. At the time, I was dating someone who I eventually proposed to a year later.
2014 – Got married and later on connected with one of my teammates from Tyler. We were in the same industry and eventually decided to start a business together, Spirit Vibe Productions, LLC (Spirit Vibe for short). We had a handful of local clients at the time, but fast forward 4 1/2 years and we are doing music for more than seven countries (United States, Mexico, Norway, Sweden, United Kingdon, Canada, France, Germany…)
Fast forward to 2020 – I am now 29 years old, a husband to a stay-at-home mother who is also a BeachBody Coach and mother to our beautiful 3-year old daughter, Jayden, who turns 4 in a month. I am at the point where I am deciding to work four months out of the year and will allocate the following months to my love photography, family, and traveling.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Imagine this – You’re 25 years old, just started a business, bought a brand new house, two brand new cars, your wife just had a gorgeous baby…life is amazing.
Then, while you’re driving down 75 after having lunch with your mom, you received a phone call from your wife with uncontrollable crying on the other end of the phone. You ask what’s wrong and she can’t collect herself. After several seconds, she gathers enough composure to tell you that she was just fired from her job, the week she returns from maternity leave.
Life completely stopped for me. Although I was making good money, I wasn’t making enough to support our current lifestyle at the time. It hit me that I had to lock it down and not only gain more financial intelligence; I had to make more money to support our family.
I was coaching at a cheerleading gym, as well as doing cheer music for a handful of teams who booked with Spirit Vibe, but I realized that I had to start putting out a better product if I wanted to be taken seriously. I eventually left the cheer gym and focused 100% of my energy on Spirit Vibe, and although going out on a limb is scary, that is where the fruit is.
Spirit Vibe fully supports my family now and my wife has been able to stay home with the baby ever since that incident years ago. We are extremely blessed.
Please tell us about Spirit Vibe.
I am an Audio Engineer and Co-Owner of Spirit Vibe. We are a Custom Cheer and Dance music source and work with over 300 teams around the world. That number continues to grow every year. Since there are copyrights in place, you cannot use mainstream music, alter it, call it your own work, then go sell it, Nowadays, if you want to call something your own, you have to create it from scratch. I have a full studio and bring in about 4-7 vocalists a week to write and record for our teams. Many teams have themes, Prestonwood Christian Academy being one of them. Since they are a Parochial school, I do a custom, gospel-themed cheerleading mix for them every year. We are most proud of the fact that we have structured our company to cover so many bases that we have no need to outsource work. We even offer services for other music producers who may be in need of a service, such as a female or male vocalist.
What sets us apart from other cheer music companies is our style. We have a very eclectic sound that is somewhat unorthodox when you compare it to mainstream cheer music. This is due to our fearlessness in incorporating new sounds and genres into our mixes. This has been our biggest competitive competency over the years and continues to give us an edge.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would as for more help. Sometimes you have to set your pride aside and realize that some lessons don’t have to be hard. I would also have invested more money early on, rather than spending it on material things that never added to my net-worth.
