Today we’d like to introduce you to Rex Benson.
Rex, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born and raised in Fort Worth Texas in the restaurant business. I graduated from Texas Tech University in 1999. I came back to Fort Worth and opened a mortgage and real estate company for 11 years. I came back into the restaurant in December of 2007.
The Ol South was founded by my father David Benson in 1962. We are celebrating our 55 year in business. We have received numerous honors of best breakfast by southern living magazine and various local ads. I am the sole owner and plan on expanding our brand.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The restaurant business is never a smooth road so we are used to bumpy roads. We have had countless obstacles that I have had to overcome in recent years but as the saying goes, what doesn’t kill you will only make you stronger.

We are open 24/7 a week. We have been in business for 55 years! We are family owned and always have been. We get voted best breakfast every year in Fort Worth. We serve over 10,000 guests every week! What were you like growing up?
I have always been a high energy guy. I love people and being around people all the time. I get a great sense of pride when people are happy!
I was a wild child when I was a kid running around restaurant. I was a terror. I guess I grew up somewhat.
