Meet Cassy Dorr of Hair by Cassy in Uptown – Voss Salon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassy Dorr.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Cassy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My inspiration to become a hairstylist happened unexpectedly. My mother was a hairstylist for over forty years, so growing up I would watch her working behind the chair and my friends and I would play “Beauty Shop” and I would always color and style my dolls’ hair. Later in high school, I found myself doing all my friends hair and make-up for prom and dance competitions.

I went to college to study kinesiology, my mother really wanted me to pursue a career in the cosmetology industry because she saw the effortless talent I had. However, I did not, I went on and got my associates degree. While obtaining my degree, I starting styling for brides and weddings. The feeling of seeing other ladies not only love their hair but just how they overall felt good and more confident made me feel good as well. My mother always told me I should go to cosmetology school, she saw the joy it gave me. I had no training or classes, just passion!

I began my beauty journey two months after I finished my associate’s degree at the Aveda Institute of Dallas. My first couple of weeks into my new career path I set a whole new list of goals to accomplish. One, being number one in my class. I succeeded in every assignment given to me and was eager to learn more. I had some setbacks, with a back injury due to an accident. As soon as I was released to come back, I took any opportunity to catch up on anything I missed.

I went to school sixty-plus hours a week to make up the hours I missed with being gone for over a month. I was scheduling my own clients, and building my online portfolio via Instagram. With that being said, I entered my work in several hair contests mostly for more exposure through hashtags and such. I hit my 1500 hour mark right before my scheduled graduation date. I graduated as Valedictorian of my class and accepted a love and education award. Actually reaching this accomplishment brought me to tears, I worked so hard and there were so many other deserving students in my class. I truly couldn’t believe it.

Now that I am where I’m at, I couldn’t see me in any other career field. I think that when you find the thing that gives you happiness, you just know. This is where I am supposed to be and what I am meant to do. This is my purpose to brighten peoples lives with the touch of my fingers, make people feel and look beautiful. It’s incredible the power you have to change someone’s view on themselves.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
An obstacle I struggle with the most I would say would be balanced and keeping my body healthy. I had a spinal trauma injury in 2018 and I sometimes overwork myself and end up in a lot of pain from just not listening to my body and doing too much. Other than that any other challenges would just be within my self. I am my worst critic and extremely hard on myself, and everything I do I know there’s always room for improvement and growth. But all and all, for the most part, it has been a pretty smooth road. I am lucky enough to say that I have an amazing support system of friends, family, and co-workers who inspire me every day and always push me.

Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
I would say one of my specialties is braiding and styling for bridals. I started in this career through styling for weddings and events. While in school I grew a love for color as well but I feel my most unique trait would be my braid style. I like to do big romantic fluffy braids.

I also specialize in blondes and dimensional brunettes/brondes. In the beauty industry, there are always new trends and techniques to learn. One of my favorites is hair painting. I love free painting or balayage because of the creative freedom you have. To me, I feel like its the most customizable and personalized. No head of hair looks the same. I believe what sets me apart from others would be my style of how I braid and blonde. Everything has a soft but textured look to it.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was super active. I danced for ten years in eight different genres along with elite team competing. Some other interests I had was singing, fashion, and I loved anything creative or making something. I also enjoyed running, swimming, and gymnastics. I always had to have something going on whether it was an art project or making up a new dance, I just loved to be busy.

As far as describing my personality, I would say energetic and outgoing. I always had a group of friends staying the night. I could be shy at times but once I warmed up to someone I was for sure an extrovert.
