Today we’d like to introduce you to Miss Marcy Rodsky.
Miss Marcy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My story begins in the late 90’s when I wandered into The Bone on Elm St. for Hashbrown’s Blues Jam every Tuesday night. That night happened to be anniversary and I witnessed so many incredible sounds performed by global Blues artists, namely, Sam Myers. I immediately fell in the love with the sound and the scene and began developing musical relationships with musicians and booking gigs. I was later approached by KNON 89.3fm Don O. about writing an original song to be included in their 10th Annual KNON Blues album.
I wrote “SugarDaddy” which became a local bar anthem for its hook “I love my SugarDaddy for the money” and the audience yells “for the money!” We had lots of fun hosting our weekly hour-and-a-half Happy Hour at Pearl, Times Ten Cellars, then later The Balcony Club. Since then I/we have written 19 songs for two albums under CSP Records which is a label that concentrates on placing songs on TV and film. We have big dreams of getting one of our songs picked up by another artist or maybe a TV show or movie.
At the moment, we are playing the Dallas circuit and entertaining the folks with our sounds. We love to perform and invite everyone to come and hear what Dallas sounds like. The musicians I work with are some of the musical anchors that keep Dallas a unique and incomparable sound. Dave Burris on guitar, George Geurin (owner of DES Mastering), Bubba Barge, and rotating horn players between Joyce Spencer, Jason Davis, and Gaika James. We perform regularly, if not weekly, at a club near you. Please consult our website www.missmarcy.com for gig dates and details. We write “Drinkin’ and Cheatin'” songs for the wimmenz. I’ve been working the Dallas music scene since the 90’s and am proud to have been selected:
Dallas Observer Best Blues Artist 2013/2014 nominated.
Top Ten Blues Acts in Dallas/FW 2015- Dallas Observer.
Dallas A-List nominated 2013-present.
Two records with CSP Records.
Two professional-grade videos: “SugarDaddy” and “C-A-S-H (That’s What Mama Wants)”.
Two performances at the much-coveted Bedford Blues Festival (Main Stage and KNON Stage).
Each of my records contains a quote on the inside sleeve. The first self-titled record (2013) “Ain’t nothin’ sexier than a man with a paycheck”. The second record entitled “Deep Ellum” (2015) “If you’re not the woman he’s lying to, then you’re the woman he’s lying about”.
Our goal is to continue writing songs and performing for music lovers. We gig regularly on the weekends. Our long term goals include playing Blues festivals around the globe, writing more music, and representing our beloved city, Dallas, with the best back-beat a Blues hustler can appreciate.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. If you stay in anything long enough, there are going to be some obstacles to overcome. However, it’s been a fun road! Worst-case scenarios are clubs and promoters not paying correctly. Fortunately, this scene is small enough that troublemakers are usually outed and those that survive have maintained a long reputation of engaging in respectable business practices.
Please tell us more about your work. What do you guys do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
We are a band from Deep Ellum, Dallas, TX. Our sound is the sound of Dallas. The band is comprised of musicians who have been working the scene since the scene became a scene! LOL, We play Blues in the tradition of Bessie Smith, Etta James, and T-Bone Walker.
We specialize in Blues music and one helluva performance. We are known for our naughty songs, high energy show, sassy and sexy nuance, and girl-power tunes!
We set us apart is our unique songs and memorable stage performance. We are a favorite of private events because we can adapt and modify our sound and size, and exhibit total professionalism on the gig. We are repeatedly hired by the same agents because they can be confident we will present a show that is uniquely Dallas.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
There’s been a few….. being on a billboard in with Blues legend Michael Burke RIP.
