Meet Rochelle Garcia of Beauty and Spice in Garland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rochelle Garcia.

Rochelle, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started Baking in October of 2017 after I had my son Jayden. Originally I started baking to help my family financially as my Partner Jay was working double hours while I stayed home with our newborn son. With going from two incomes to one income we struggled. I slowly started off by making cake pops, dipped strawberries and other treats. I realized it was a lot harder then I thought, but I learned so much and it became something I enjoyed doing while being able to provide income for my family. I was terrified to do cakes so I stuck to small treats.

In 2018 My family separated and things just weren’t going as planned, 2018 was a very tough year for myself and my children, so I stopped baking. Life just wasn’t what I expected and I had lost myself. November of 2018 my daughter started asking me questions about baking and why I stopped and why haven’t I tried again, she really encouraged me to just bake a cake. Baking cakes was so terrifying to me because it wasn’t just a small cake pop it was an entire cake like a masterpiece lol and hadn’t baked for almost a year.

I am beyond grateful my daughter Gabriella gave me those words of encouragement because since November of 2018 I have not stopped baking cakes. I went for it and since then I have grown and learned so much in the cake world. I realized baking cakes was a huge passion of mine and no matter what life threw at me I could bake a cake and see customers face light up. My daughter Gabriella is my best critique when it comes to my cakes she will tell me exactly how it is and she has no shame lol I love her so much!

My son Jayden who is currently 2.5 years old, loves when I bake he is always eating the leftover cake and walking around with a spatula of frosting, not that its healthy but its something that keeps a smile on my face or when he says “mom its a birthday”, these things keep me going. Baking for me started off as just solely wanting the income, I can say Baking now is a passion and its something I enjoy with all of my heart.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Roads are never smooth lol. My baking world has been an adventure. From someone destroying a cake I made and having three hours to fix a two-tiered cake to having six hours to make a three tiered wedding cake. Being a baker can be so intense sometimes especially when things in your personal life affect your baking business. Someone even broke my kitchen aid mixer. Instead of giving up like I did in 2018, I put my all to not take any steps back and to prove to myself how far I got and nothing nor anyone can push me back from my passion.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Beauty and Spice – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Beauty and Spice is my business name and was established in Feb 2019. I bake cakes, cupcakes, marshmallow pops, cake pops, dipped strawberries and other treats, but I really specialize in cakes. I do other treats as well but most of my orders have been cakes or cupcakes. I’m known for my cakes in the DFW area.

I think what sets me apart from other bakers is my creativeness. I do not like to make a cake that looks like an exact picture that was sent to me, I like to add a twist or do a different style. Nobody wants to keep seeing the same cake design in my eyes… I’m most proud of how much Beauty and Spice has grown since November of 2018, I can only thank God, my children and all of Beauty and Spice customers/supporters.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I do plan and pray that within two years I can open a small bakery in Dallas. Something my kids can have in the future. I do not want to speak too early but Beauty and Spice will be expanding this year, stay tuned.
