Meet Aisha B. Mullen of MVP Beauty in Richardson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aisha B. Mullen.

Aisha, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up watching my grandmother, who was a licensed cosmetologist. She taught me at five years old how to braid my Barbie dolls hair and I never stopped. As long as long as I could remember, I always knew I wanted to do hair. I completed cosmetology my last two years of high school, so I graduated with somewhat of a plan. I went off to college and continued doing hair in my spare time. I made it to my senior year, while working an internship, and still doing hair on the side; I decided to pursue my passion full time. I’m still passionate about going back to school to complete my last year of college (just for my own accomplishments); however, I don’t regret the decision I made.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has definitely not been smooth at all. In May 2001, I unfortunately, tragically lost my grandmother in a car accident, in which she died on the scene, in front of me, I was only 16. She literally was my first teacher and I will always cherish her. I’ve experienced several life struggles over the years, but I’ve been taught faith and hardwork, so I keep going. Fast forward to June 2019, I unfortunately, tragically lost my mother, I’m still lost and still processing, yet I’m still pressing because I know that’s what she would’ve wanted me to do.

Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
As I mentioned before, my grandmother, the late Myrtle Vivian Polk, was and still is my greatest influence. So in honor of her, I named my business after her; MVP Beauty! I’m a hairstylist and over the years, have added on makeup artists. I get excited to do either, however, hair is my first Love. Lol! I specialize in multi-textured healthy hair care and styling, which includes cuts, color and extensions. I’m all about switching it up and versatility, as long as we can agree on keeping it healthy! I’m mostly known for hair color, in which I am an Advanced Artistic Educator and Brand Specialist for Pravana, a globally recognized, professional product and hair color company.

I am most proud of being able to share with my clients and fellow stylists, all the knowledge and techniques that I learn along the way. I can’t speak for others, but I feel what sets me apart is I genuinely Love everyone who sits in my chair! Even if you have gotten on my nerves, I still love you. Lol. I’ve embraced that my profession is not just a career path, but it’s my mission, my God-given gift, so I’m direct, yet delicate about what I do. I like for all people (no matter race, religion or gender) to come and have an MVP Beauty experience and then look forward to coming back! Not leaving feeling judged or embarrassed, but feeling free and looking good!!!

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
My personal definition of success is having a personal relationship with my Creator! Everything else after that will add up, it’s just a bonus!
