Today we’d like to introduce you to Steven Diomampo.
Steven, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I learned how to skate at the very young age of five but did not discover aggressive online skating until seven years later. I was hooked. I spent most school nights and every weekend skating all over DFW. One of my favorite skating spots was Eisenbergs in Plano. Sadly, it’s no longer around but I do get nostalgic when I walk into Carriers Skateshop in Plano. A childhood skating buddy of mine owns it.
When I wasn’t discovering new skate spots or participating in skating competitions, I was teaching others how to skate. The seeds were being planted for HipSkate and I had no clue.
As with most people, you grow up. I went into the corporate world in the tech field and I married my high school sweetheart I now have an awesome dog and three incredible kids.
Throughout the years, I would pick up my skates and go check out a local skatepark. I still enjoyed it when I got out there and after a few years, I decided I really wanted to do something with skating. That’s when I became a certified skate instructor through Skate IA and launched HipSkate in 2019. HipSkate is currently offering lessons through the Frisco Athletic Center but has plans to reach kids beyond our hometown.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As with most things, there are challenges. Believe it or not, the HipSkate logo took a while for me to design. I wanted it to be perfect. We also had a tough time filling up classes in another city, so we decided to hold on to offering additional classes.
Other than that, it has been a smooth road. We have great friends who helped spread the word about our Frisco classes and we have many students who keep returning because they love skating with us.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
HipSkate teaches kids how to in-line skate. I am most proud of seeing kids have fun and gain confidence during the program.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I hope to offer lessons in more cities. I want to bring skating back!
