Today we’d like to introduce you to Albert Hughes.
Albert, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After graduation high school in 2002, I went straight into basic training for the Army. There, I was introduced to Jiu Jitsu. By 2004 I was addicted and training full time. As a 20-year-old fresh off a deployment to Kuwait, I was completely uninterested in long hours at work, and I had some money saved up, but it wouldn’t last long. I went jobless for 5 months, passing up a great job at Peterbilt, and spent all my savings before I finally returned to the work force as a server at Pappadeaux. For the next 3 years I would work weekends at the restaurant and spend the weeks doing 2 a day at the Jiu Jitsu gym. I eventually started teaching some lessons and some classes at the gym and was making about $200-$300 per week from Jiu Jitsu. I had roommates and very low overhead so I quit work and focused completely on Jiu Jitsu. In 2009 I opened Genesis Jiu Jitsu, fulfilling a big dream of mine to work for myself doing what I love, which is train, teach, and compete in Jiu Jitsu. I still teach most of my classes and remain focused on producing high quality martial artist and people through the lessons we learn on the mat.
This year I bought a commercial lot and am in the design phase of building our new headquarters from the ground up. This has a been a big goal of mine as an entrepreneur for a long time.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We have had challenges for sure. In 2015 I bought out my partner and cofounder. We’ve had some staff leave and start competing gyms. Standard business lumps. For the most part, I’m happy to say things have stayed on the up and up.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Genesis Jiu Jitsu – what should we know?
Genesis Jiu Jitsu excels in teaching an effective ground fighting style in a welcoming, encouraging environment. What we do is tough and can be very intimidating for beginners. We specialize in making people feel at home during an often uncomfortable experience.
