Today we’d like to introduce you to Anesia Renee.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Anesia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
At the age of six, I began playing the piano, which later blossomed into a passion for music all together especially singing. My piano skills helped my ear and once I realized I was meant to sing, it was grind mode until then. From six years old to now being a 24-year old, I have been in countless recitals, lessons, groups, auditions, which was all part of God’s bigger plan for my life. My music style stems from the different stages of my life. I’ve played and sang in a church which gave my gospel roots and strong voice, singing in chorales and ensembles made me appreciate music theory and how to formulate and communicate with other musicians, that mixed with my personal love for neo-soul, r&b soul, and r&b fusion is what creates my authentic sound.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Anytime you are in pursuit of your passion, you’re taking a risk. I remember trying to make music that everyone else would like, trying to keep up with who was current, but then I realized I’m cheating myself the moment I stop being me. I can’t say that it’s been easy. I remember one time I planned a big show at a local venue, hires the band, BGVs, sound engineer, set MUA and hairstylist, etc.
The booking consultant for the venue called THE day of my show and said they double booked the venue with another small party apologized and hung up. I then had to call everyone involved and cancel. My stomach was in knots. That taught me the valuable lesson of contracts (lol). But on a serious note, I remember telling myself this is the start of many “no”s and that’s ok. I decided that day to marry myself to this… for better or for worse. However, no matter how hard the grind is… God is the reason for it all.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I played and sang for the first time in the 4th grade. I prepared an original song I wrote and practiced for weeks, only to get on stage and forget what I wrote and randomly played “If it ain’t you” -Alicia Keys. I remember it was in the outside amphitheater and the whole school was outside. I was a nervous wreck. But when that applause hit me, I was never the same.
