Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaquaila Woodard.
Shaquaila, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a licensed cosmetologist of 13 years. I had been working in Corporate America and doing hair on the side, up until the day I felt the spirit of the Lord say it was time to leave and step out on faith. So I start typing my resignation letter. Within two weeks of my resignation letter, I started working for myself. That was the best decision I’ve ever made. I have been working for myself for four years now. I recently opened up my own salon, which the grand opening will be on February 23rd.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, with the beauty industry, it is always changing, upgrading, and improving so you have to keep up with the industry needs. You have to be self-motivated because your business depends on you and how you advertise. You have to fund your business, so even if you have bad days of not making money, you still have to come out of pocket to fund your business and that can be hard and stressful at times. With me opening up my own Salon came with big sacrifices and stronger faith. I put the majority if not all my money into getting this salon up and running. I’ve had to sacrifice my wants for the needs of my business. I’ve had to stay in hotels and stay at a friend’s house during my renovation process because I knew at the time I wasn’t going to have enough to pay for rent and all the upcoming bills. Now the renovation is done I have my own place and doing well and my salon it’s looking great. You just have to trust the process.

Qua’s Hair is a hair salon that specializes in all hair textures and healthy hair solutions for each client’s needs. Also, we will be releasing our new handmade hair growth oils and conditioning hair mask. We provide edge control, raw hair extensions, wigs, and non Surgical Hair Replacement Solutions for clients with hair loss issues. I am known for growing hair and I am most proud of my company because it is built on morals and has remained steady and is growing rapidly. What sets me aside from others in the industry is I choose to use my gift of hair as a Ministry to relate God’s word and make people feel beautiful and understand that they are very special.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was always the goofy one very friendly, open-minded, but still shy and had low self-esteem (which is why enjoy pouring encouraging words to others). I’ve always had an interest for hair. I would cut my doll’s hair in bobs, do French rolls, and spiral curls. I was always helping others and enjoyed being crafty.
