Meet Dr. Becky Allen of Genesis PT & Wellness in Northeast Dallas and Walnut Hill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Becky Allen.

Dr. Becky, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
During my first pregnancy, I experienced quite a bit of low back and pelvic pain that interfered with my daily life as well as my work. Being a Physical Therapist, I did all the “right” things to alleviate my pain: exercise, stretching, massage, and prenatal chiropractic care. Nothing touched the pain! So, I hobbled through the next nine months on Tylenol and nightly back rubs from my sweet husband, disheartened by the lack of care available for such a common condition. How frustrating it was to be a Doctor of Physical Therapy and not be able to fix my own body!

Even then, it wasn’t until I experienced labor, birth and the postpartum period that I truly realized how much is lacking in the healthcare system for women. We see our health care provider, be it midwife or OBGYN, about 15 times throughout pregnancy. Then, following the birth of our baby, the standard is ONE postpartum check-up at six weeks postpartum. At this visit, we get the “all clear” for all the things. Then what? I felt lost. I had so many more questions. How can I go back to exercise? When? What exercises can I do? What exercises can I NOT do? What is normal, what is not? I realized that someone needs to fill this void in the healthcare system, and that person should be a specialized Physical Therapist.

After the birth of my second child about two years later, I began a year-long program through Texas Woman’s University in Dallas to become certified as a Women’s Health Physical Therapy Specialist. In the Fall of 2019, I launched Genesis PT & Wellness and haven’t looked back! Many people ask me why I chose to start my own practice rather than starting out in an established Women’s Health Physical Therapy clinic. It’s truly a two-part answer: for one, there just are not many Women’s Health Physical Therapy clinics out there, as we are such a specialized, niche practice.

And two, the established clinics in the Dallas area are mainly in-network clinics, which is a different model of care that what I envisioned for myself. I desired to be able to see women one-on-one, for an hour or more without feeling rushed. I did not want my practice to be dictated by what insurance companies would or would not pay for. To me, this type of care requires a certain intimacy and personalization that I felt I could best provide as a private, out-of-network practice.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Overall, I would say it has been rather smooth! Since opening my doors in October of 2019, I have had a steady stream of clients rolling in, and beginning in February of 2020, I opened up a 4th day on my schedule. The most difficult part has been transitioning from being a full-time stay at home mom to my two young kids to now a (almost) full time working mom. It has been a huge adjustment for us all but, ultimately, I am thrilled to provide this example of hard work for my children. Of course, being a stay at home mom was hard work as well, and now they have experienced both and, I believe, will grow up with an appreciation for that.

We’d love to hear more about your practice.
I am a Physical Therapist Specializing in Women’s Health & Abdominopelvic Health. This includes things like pregnancy-related pain and discomfort, pelvic floor prep for labor and delivery, pelvic floor dysfunction (including urinary incontinence, painful intercourse, chronic constipation, urinary urgency or frequency, chronic urinary tract infections, and more), diastasis recti, cesarean section recovery, postpartum wellness and safe return to exercise, pelvic organ prolapse, symptoms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Endometriosis, Interstitial Cystitis, Overactive Bladder, Pudendal Neuralgia, Vulvodynia, Vestibulodynia, Vaginismus, and low back and hip pain with or without Sciatica.

It is my passion to come alongside women to support them through this perinatal time period, including pre-pregnancy as well as years following. It is never too early or too late to take charge of your pelvic health! My treatment approach includes an individualized combination of manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, postural reeducation, surface electromyography biofeedback, a personalized home exercise program, and I am also certified in Functional Dry Needling.

I am very proud to offer one on one office visits, home visits, and Telehealth consults. You will always feel heard and respected and will never feel misunderstood or rushed. By offering out-of-network care, I can provide you with the superior, personalized care you deserve, because my treatment plan will never be dictated by what insurance will or will not reimburse me for. I don’t need to see multiple patients at once just to pay the bills. You deserve better than that when it comes to something so intimate as pelvic health. You deserve private, individualized treatment that is specifically tailored to you and your needs.

This is what sets Genesis PT & Wellness apart- each 60-90 minute session is spent 100% with a Doctor of Physical Therapy who is a specialist in the very problems you are experiencing. Because of this model of care, you need less frequent visits and heal much more quickly, saving you time and money overall. What also sets Genesis PT & Wellness apart from others is that I offer three types of visits: in office, in your home, or even virtually through Telehealth in my secure patient portal. You choose what works best for your lifestyle!

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I am excited to be rolling out new packages as well as adding a fourth day to my schedule! The first new package is the Postpartum Wellness Package which includes a two week postpartum home visit, a six-week in-office pelvic floor evaluation, and an eight-week in-office follow up visit. This will allow us to locate any potential vulnerabilities in your core system early, including your deep abdominals and pelvic floor, to prevent common complications such as diastasis recti, pelvic organ prolapse, incontinence, painful intercourse, back pain and more!

The second package is the Prenatal Wellness Package and will include a few visits spread out over the entire pregnancy, covering topics such as safe mobility and exercise during pregnancy, what you can do during pregnancy to prevent common postpartum complications, positions for labor and delivery to optimize your pelvic floor health, exercises to prevent and ease common types of pregnancy-related pain and discomfort, and education on what you can do during those early postpartum weeks to begin the rehabilitation of your pelvic floor and abdominals safely.

I will also be rolling out classes for the community very soon, including Pelvic Floor 101, How to Push While Protecting your Pelvic Floor, and Diastasis Recti: Healing With Breath and Movement. Down the road, I also hope to open a second location and bring on a second Women’s Health Physical Therapist- stay tuned!
