Today we’d like to introduce you to LaMarcus Ross.
Thanks for sharing your story with us LaMarcus. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
As a child, I always had a passion for music. Coming from a musically inclined family, the music came naturally. In 8th grade, I wrote my first song entitled “Wreck”. “Wreck” was a song about the state of our world and what could make the world a better place through the eyes of a 12-year-old boy. After writing the song, I struggled to find a place for my voice because my environment was more interested in “trap” music versus music that talked about the condition of the real world. I got discouraged and hung the mic up for four years.
I poured my focus into football all throughout high school then found myself at Langston University on a football scholarship; this is where my journey truly began. I met a group of friends that saw potential in me and introduced me into the land of music production. From there, I fell in love with music again and began writing. Since then, I’ve worked with Grammy award-nominated producers who have worked with the likes of Travis Scott, Dorrough and Chamillionaire. Also featured music with Empire Records recording artist T-Rell. In 2016 I was offered my first record deal. Citing creative differences, I went a different route vowing to only create uplifting, motivating, soul-stirring music.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Before I became King Qreed, the road was rough. Formerly known as “MarcWaine”; I was going through a stage in life seeking my purpose and true identity that God had intended for me. My music became more positive and influential (which not exactly what my audience was accustomed to). I came up as a fan of Trap Music, which contains mainly consists of stories of poverty, drugs, violence, women and the materialistic treasures of the world. It’s good for entertainment but isn’t life-giving, there wasn’t any purpose behind it.
I want my music to serve a purpose be a light and encourage others so I rebrand myself as King Qreed. My biggest struggle was my subconscious fear of not being accepted. How can I be positive but still cool enough to stay relevant? Will people take me serious? Those were the questions I would repeatedly ask myself. Acceptance was my biggest struggle. After making the change, I’m seeing the support that I never knew existed. It definitely showed me how our minds will play tricks on us.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
King Qreed is a Musician, Songwriter, and Artist. I specialize in making soul-stirring music that appeals to all of your senses. Music that brightens your day gives you a different perspective on life lifts you up when you’re feeling low! I’m known for giving you the truth; the good and bad. We’ve all been through tough times in life or maybe even have had a rough past. I candidly express my struggles and tell how I’ve overcome an obstacle that help lead me to where I am today. It’s relatable, positive, and groovy.
I’m proud to be a positive light in dark places. It feels good to know that my music plays a daily part in changing people’s lives. What sets me apart from others is my lyrical content. I really break the mold of traditional hip-hop/Christian Rap. I feel like I have my own genre of music in a sense. Most importantly, I focus on being family-friendly and being a positive role model to the youth through my music.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was very shy and hated being in the spotlight, but I’ve always had a love and excelled in sports; music, art, and photography and feel these things helped my personality shine through.
