Meet Melisa Pullins of The Picket Fence in Canton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melisa Pullins.

The Picket Fence started with friends who gathered around a farm table discussing and dreaming of ways to create a local shop that would be different than anything else in the area. A shop where as soon as you opened the front door, you would smell freshly baked items and you would see 1001 beautiful things that would make you smile. A shop that has unique finds, everyday items and wonderful stories about the makers behind the products: those friends took that dream and created The Picket Fence.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The opening of The Picket Fence was not easy at all. Small town living is challenging, and growing a business in a small town is even tougher! Many residents commute to the larger cities for work and for shopping, so it can be challenging at first to gain the trust and loyalty of the locals. We strive to build trust and loyalty by getting to know our customers. These customers often become our friends and they frequent the shop regularly. They do this because they are comfortable and we take the time to get to know them and what they are looking for. We strive to make that personal connection for each and every customer.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Once upon a time, small town life once revolved around general stores across America. Many communities relied on small general stores for tools, housewares, groceries and more. They were also a place where neighbors would get caught up on the weather, the news and gossip of the community. Even though times have changed, there is still a great need for these charming general stores, so we opened one up… Right here in Canton.

Did you know that there is a modern-day general store right here in Canton, Texas? It’s called The Picket

Fence. It is located at 1001 N. Trade Days Blvd. Canton, Texas 75103. What? You haven’t been to our store yet? Well, it is time to change that. Let me fill you in on our modern general store.

Why do we call it a modern general store? The answer is simple: One of our main goals is to help inspire you to connect with the simple pleasures in life and to help provide tools to create a better life. We sell joyfully selected “tools” such as apparel, farmhouse finds, home décor, dry goods, artisanal jams, handmade soaps, everyday items, delicious baked goods, heartfelt gifts and so much more.

We proudly have 19 local makers that supply the shop with their handmade and artisan goods. These artisans come from all different walks of life. We have veterans, farmers, teachers, bakers, stay at home moms, mechanics, legal professionals, gardeners, former dispatchers and entrepreneurs. Each has vastly different backgrounds, but all have one thing in common and that is passion. We all have a passion for sending our well made products out into the world for others to enjoy… And it is that passion that connects us all at The Picket Fence.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
At The Picket Fence, we strongly believe in supporting small businesses and independent makers first. We truly believe in the power of shopping local and as often as possible; we seek out local vendors and makers first when looking for product to carry in the store. In fact, many of our products are made from our own locals! We also gladly make space in our store for other small vendors outside of our area, too but we always look to make a special connection with local makers, artists and Texas based businesses first.

You see, at The Picket Fence, supporting local isn’t just an idea, it’s a way of life. We look forward to creating a community gathering place that embodies the spirit of a general store and more.

We have a multitude of community events and workshops planned at the shop. Some of our upcoming classes are classes that teach people how to make handmade greeting cards, artisan jams, pickles, terrariums, hand painted signs, gardening and more! We would love for you to visit our shop, take a class and learn new things amongst friends. We have so much fun here!

Come walk thru The Picket Fence and see why you are our friends and neighbors, not just our customers.
