Meet Kimberly Grant of Stitchingbystylez in Killeen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Grant.

Kimberly, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started doing hair at the age of 12. I struggled as a child with my identity and beauty. Hair became a sense of expression for me. I began exploring other styles and techniques to hair and came across wig making. It was there I discovered another passion for hair. Two years ago, I purchased my first sewing machine to begin my wig journey and at first, I sucked tremendously! I cried, I wanted to give up, but something told me to keep pushing. Here I am, two years later and I couldn’t imagine where I would have been had I stopped. I’ve made wigs for the Grammys, a tv personality, drag queens and ladies battling alopecia. I truly aspire to make every wish come true through wigs! My journey has been tough, it’s hard trying to push yourself around the world while staying in one place. At times seeing other’s success can deter you. You get the feeling to stop pursuing your dreams because you’re not where they are. I have to always remember that their journey is not mine!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I struggled tremendously in the beginning. I had no outline or goal set for my business. I had no idea where to start. I took bits and pieces from others that I followed at the time on social media and used them as the inspiration for what I wanted in my business. I started networking, trying to find celebrities to wear my wigs for exposure. No one ever responded. It really made me sad because I didn’t know how I would get my foot in the door or my name out there like I wanted to. I stopped focusing on the celebrity side and just focused on branding myself and pushing my product. Eventually, the wigs started speaking for themselves.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am known for making custom. Machine made units. By machine, I am referring to the sewing machine. Based on the client’s measurements is how I make the wigs. This ensures that the wig is custom made, to you! What I’m most proud of about my company is that I learned everything from scratch. I struggled every day when I first started. I wanted to quit almost every day! What sets me apart is my passion. I am always eager to please my clients and I NEVER want them to not tell me if something is wrong. Being able to fix mistakes allows me to grow as a business. If I don’t know, I won’t grow.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My goal is to become self employed. I’ve always dreamed of working for myself, so that is my main goal. I’m looking forward to teaching others what I’ve learned along the way, showing them that they too, can be just as good as me if not better! I am always constantly working on my brand. Whether it be the boxes the wigs come in, to the stitching and even the tags on my wigs, I want them to be perfect. I am also looking into expanding my business to clothing as well. I want residual income. I want a business that can be passed down generations from now.
