Conversations with the Inspiring Rebekah Lovell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebekah Lovell.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I can’t recall a time that I wasn’t drawing. I remember sitting down when I was 6 to contemplate my life and what I wanted to be when I grew up. My obsession with pens, paper, and pencils steered me in the direction of artist.

Working in graphic design and as a vinyl installer gave me the desire to take charge of my career. While I love being a graphic designer, I realized I wanted more freedom and flexibility – creative control over my own life. I began to look for ways to begin working as an independent contractor.

Twisted Kids came to fruition when my business partner, Amber Williams (AliJo Props) and I were having a conversation about paint parties/events for children. We realized there was a market for these types of events and set to work forming a concrete plan of action. Twisted Kids had their first event alongside an AliJo Props showcase in September 2019, it was a small and intimate event with family and friends in attendance.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest struggle for me is being a shy and introverted person. Networking as an introvert can be challenging, but I am learning to find my voice in a loud and extroverted world. I have a great support system to keep me pushing through moments of adversity. Find or create a support system will help push you out of your comfort zone. Most importantly, believe and trust in yourself.

There are two books in particular that have been an immense benefit on my journey. “Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking” and for the young adults “Quiet Power: The Secret Strengths of Introverted Kids” by Susan Cain.

What should we know about Twisted Kids? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’m an artist, a graphic designer, and vinyl installer. Twisted Kids specifically specializes in painting with children, children’s paint parties, painting events. We do have the adult edition debuting this year, where we channel our inner childlike imagination, so keep an eye out for that.

I want to bring love, encouragement, and acceptance to a child’s life, even if for a short time. I want to boost their confidence and to have someone say “dude! That is amazing!”, “Keep it up!”. I want them to be able to use all of their imagination to express themselves freely.

Our events are primarily focused on painting characters I created specifically for Twisted Kids. My favourite character is Zephyr. He’s a monkey that flies throughout the galaxy with his bat sidekick Gupter. On Zephyr and Gupter’s travels they learn of the different cultures and belief systems of the people/animals/life that they meet along the way. They don’t wreak havoc like the other monkeys and bats. They spread love, understanding and tolerance.

For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
I believe anyone is capable of creating the life they desire. I feel that everyone’s individuality equips them for various opportunities. As our society becomes more and more equal, the opportunities available to us are as abundant and unique as we are. I believe in empowering humanity and not seeing each other as competition.
