Today we’d like to introduce you to Dee Walton.
Dee, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started singing at the age of 6 at a little country church in Royse City, Texas. I grew up as what the church community calls a “church boy.” At the age of 10, my grandmother saw the potential of myself and three of my cousins. We then became the “Anointed Voices of BibleWay.” We learned our first gospel song as a quartet group by Lee Williams and the Spiritual QC’s called “I’m Gonna Make It.” About a year later, we met a man named Ronald “Ram” Davis in Terrell, Texas who saw us perform and was blown away. He teamed up with my grandmother and began to mature our gift.
After about three years, the group split but I continued as a solo artist with Ram for two years. Now I’m about 15 or 16 and I really don’t know what I want to do because everything has come to a complete stop. I started playing keyboard for a local church in Garland, Texas and begin the path as a Minister of Music for two years. After resigning, I later joined a church in Dallas. Texas where I really developed as a singer. When I turned 21 is when my interest in RnB was at an all-time high. Although I really liked RnB, I always knew what my element was. In April of 2019, I got the opportunity of a lifetime that changed my life and career, I was graced to become a background singer for Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds. It was a very humbling experience to share the stage with an icon and role model. 2020 I decided to come back home and officially become a gospel artist,
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has definitely been rough. There have been setbacks, mountains, insecurities, doubt, frustrations, deaths, growing pains (i.e) I mean the list goes on right? I have a unique tone that I was not pleased with. I struggled because I didn’t like the way I sounded. While everyone was enjoying, I was struggling to accept it. I felt like I got a late start because I was sheltered so my musical selection was limited. But I preserved and broke barriers and learned that turbulence is the price you pay for flying high.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
My name is Dee Walton and I’m a gospel indy artist based in Dallas, Texas. I love to encourage, uplift and proclaim the name of Jesus through song. My target is to strengthen the weak, save the lost, and restore the broken. I’m not perfect and through transparency, I want people to see God’s grace in action. 2 Corinthians 12:9 says, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness…” I’m proud to serve and what sets me apart is that I am a beggar telling other beggars where the bread is at.
What were you like growing up?
I’m a class clown! I love to have fun and be vibrant in my own way. Music is/has always been the center of my focus. Quality time and Affirmation is my love language. While I can be outspoken and full of drive, I also have a tender side.
