Meet Jocelyn Yates of Nail Designs By J

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jocelyn Yates.

Jocelyn, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have been wearing nails and getting them done since I was 15. I went to college and had two degrees one in Organizational Leaderships and the other in Human Resources. When I started having children, I couldn’t afford to get my nails done so I taught myself by using YouTube. I did my own nails for many years until I was laid off my job after 17 years of service. It was then I decided that I no longer want to work for anyone else, and I wanted to be my own boss.

I moved to Texas in 2017 and started the Nail program at ITS Academy and went full time. After I graduated and got licensed, I immediately went to work in a salon as an independent contractor, and still in a salon today.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s not been smooth, and there is a lot I am still learning. I caught on very early that the beauty industry is ever-changing and you have to be able to keep up. I struggled more with building the clientele because getting women out of these other nail shops where they are cheap and faster has been difficult but it’s growing as the word gets out.

Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
I am a licensed nail tech in the Arlington, Texas area. I am passionate about nails and the healthy application of acrylic enhancements. I specialize in the bling factor! All nails should sparkle! Specializing in Acrylic Nails, Nail Art, Natural Nails.

I am most proud that at 48 years old, I stepped out as an entrepreneur and began a second career after 25+ years in corporate companies. What sets me apart is I’m licensed and I’m salon based. I’m inside of a barber/beauty salon, so I’m a good fit for single mothers who have to get their hair done or kids haircuts and can get their nails done art at once. I have a flexible schedule and open six days a week. I also work extended night hours.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I personally define success when there is a level of mental and financial freedom and you don’t have to worry about anything. Your continuous growth and investing in yourself and your business are markets I look for. Making sure I’m educating myself and growing my business daily.
