Meet Jake Wilganowski of Cine-Automatic in East Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jake Wilganowski.

Jake, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started out of film school doing production assistant work for about a year, then worked full-time at a small video production company. I stayed there for a couple of years and then went freelance, shooting for networks such as History, Discovery, and Travel. During this period, I was also shooting music videos and short films and developing my skills. That led me into the commercial and feature film world, which is where I’m at now.

Has it been a smooth road?
Early on it was hard being a freelancer and not having a steady income. I was and still am always trying to learn, and I think thats what drove me early on and kept me working up to bigger and better clients and projects—just the hunger for knowledge and trying to improve my skills and eye.

We’d love to hear more about your company.
My company is Cine-Automatic. I’m a “Director of Photography” or “Cinematographer.” I’m mostly known in the film world for shooting “Bomb City,” a dark punk-rock drama that takes place in the 90’s. In the commercial space, I work with lots of different clients and agencies, some fun ones recently were Mercedes and SEGA. My strong point is leading a professional crew executing lighting and camera movement to suite the project and style. I’m comfortable shooting a beauty commercial one day and a gritty drama the next.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The industry is leaning towards large-format capture (bigger sensors) and higher resolutions. Vintage lenses are all the rage and that will hold true for the future as well, helping to take the digital edge off the new sensors. Innovations in focus technology, camera movement and control interfaces are happening and will change the way we interact with our cameras.
