Today we’d like to introduce you to Dara Harris.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dara. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My husband, DaShawn Harris, started Harris Physical Fitness in 2011 with the intent to assist people in North Fort Worth to live and move better. After working for multiple commercial gyms, his desire to connect with people that truly needed support at an affordable rate pushed him to branch off and create something of his own. I began training under the Harris Physical Fitness umbrella in 2013 alongside him, offering our clients more flexibility in scheduling and training style. Through the years, our business has grown to serve clients at multiple gyms, offer boot camps, teach fitness classes and offer basketball training.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Working to build your own business is never simple nor easy. Working to create the programming, rates, marketing and find locations that will allow you to train as independent contractors just to get started can be overwhelming and time-consuming. Then to begin marketing yourself and establishing a name that people trust can only come from word of mouth and time invested in each client. We have been blessed to have amazing clients who have seen tremendous results due to our guidance and their diligent hard work. That is the best advertisement we can ask for.
Running your own business can heavily depend on the economy as well. I am writing this in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic and working to transition most, if not all, of my clients to online training programs from home. It’s important to be flexible or you could easily lose everything you’ve worked so hard to achieve.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a wellness business focused on helping clients improve not only their health but overall body composition. We currently meet clients out of three different gym locations, all based in the Saginaw/Haslet area. Our client base spans from the young 15-year-old athlete to the 80-year-old who is looking to improve balance and strength. Truly our experience has given us the ability to work with clients from many walks of life. DaShawn also offers 1-on-1 basketball training for young athletes looking to take their basketball IQ and skills to the next level. I am most proud of the lives changed through our coaching. Seeing clients discover an inner athlete, confidence and grit that they didn’t know they had inside of them is so rewarding.
What were you like growing up?
Our vision has been to serve. I feel that our success has come from serving others. Whether that be in the form of fitness coaching, accountability or emotional support, we believe that connecting with people and creating relationships has been the biggest contributor to our success.
