Meet Chris and Hannah Scholz of Eden Creek Landscaping in South Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris and Hannah Scholz.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Chis and Hannah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Hey there! We are Chris and Hannah Scholz. Chris and I were still newly married when we stepped out in faith to start this company. Initially, Chris was a Senior Project Manager and I was an elementary teacher. Chris and I had been spending time with the Lord, truly seeking a serious change career wise. Through much prayer, Chris felt that the Lord said to start a landscaping company. We truly did NOT know what to think or what that meant honestly. To start the business, we just stepped out. We soon sold my first car and used the cash to buy our first zero turn mower. After a couple of years, we had built up a lot of healthy relationships through lawn mowing. Naturally, we learned EVERYTHING the hard way!! The Lord was so constant and faithful in extraordinary ways. Every time there was a need, the Lord would provide. Most of the time, it was given to us for free. IT WAS CRAZY. Super amazing. Whether that was business advice, a mentor in an area, a business connection, or a piece of equipment, we always had whatever we needed. Over time we had several clients that asked us for landscaping and quickly realized the passion we had.

It was rewarding to create curb appeal for our clients. However, mowing/lawn maintenance and landscaping are truly different and require different things. We didn’t want to continue putting our efforts and energy into both. After much praying and listening, the Lord fine tuned our vision, and we knew we wanted to grow into landscape design only. We stepped out in complete faith again by handing off our sweet lawn maintenance clients to a trusted local mowing company, who was also a friend, and we solely focused on our passion. At the same time, I stepped away from teaching to engage in landscape designing fully. It was a serious season of change that shook up many areas of our life. But we were determined and DOVE right in. We wanted to truly present a design experience that was interactive for the client. We began creating 3D landscape renderings for whatever our clients could dream up. We can clearly and accurately portray what their design will look like once installed.

We renamed our company Eden Creek Landscaping and our theme is Jeremiah 17:7 & 8 “But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” Chris and I are following the leading of the Lord and we do our best to be obedient to what He asks of us. Not what we ever would have imagined we would be doing with our life; however, this has truly been a blessing and an adventure. We are so thankful to get to know so many people, build relationships and live out what we enjoy doing!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Owning a business is NEVER a smooth road. As the owner, you are wearing so many hats. You ARE sales. You ARE the office manager. You ARE Human Resource. You ARE the accountant. You ARE customer service… You ARE IT. These things can take a toll unless you set boundaries within your company and learn to delegate. Creating boundaries is hard. You have to evaluate yourself and what your vision is. You are going to live out and live by this company. You also have to lead and you must be consistent in whatever precedence you set with your employees and your clients. We are firm believers that, as the owner, you set the tone for your company. You lead by serving. We try to take this approach in all aspects of our company, which will always create challenges. You are constantly learning and evolving systems, refining, and restructuring with the growth of your business, all the while maintaining who you are and what you’re rooted in as a business. It is crucial to define and build a strong foundation. It is what we are building on. So yeah, owning a business is more like the opposite of a smooth road.

Another interesting challenge is learning to run a business with your spouse. It has been beautiful working together, but you do have to set boundaries with this as well. Learning how to communicate as business partners as well as a couple can be challenging. We have had to learn how to switch off the business discussions to focus on family time and each other. Chris and I are business partners, parents to 2 sweet boys, a married couple, and just ourselves. The work/ life balance is even more the balancing act then your usual 9-5 job. We are only human and we are real, but we are learning and taking this adventure one day at a time.

Please tell us about your business.
We are real people. Seriously. We are parents. We are family oriented. We are budgeters. We go to the grocery store, taxi our children around, change diapers, and on very rare occasions, binge watch tv shows. I say all that to say: We get it. We can relate to the needs of our clients. We are not doing this for some get the rich quick scheme. Obviously. We are just people who love what we do and enjoy living it out each day.

We are a professional landscape design and install company. It is our joy to design and install your project with excellence and integrity. We just want to be genuine with our clients. Chris and I believe that we should be good stewards with our money personally. We want to help our clients to make a wise investment and to receive a good return on their investment. I choose to do business with people that I can trust and have a relationship with. That is our focus.

Here is our typical process: We start with an initial design consultation where we walk with you through your property, listening, and take notes. We want to know plants you like or dislike. We want to see pictures of what you have seen at your friend’s momma’s house that you have marveled over every time you drive by. We will ask questions and take notes about the overall end goal for your home. We like to incorporate these goals for your property so that we can design with the future in mind. For example, if you are planning to build a shop in your backyard, we can design that in so you can see your property with all future concepts in place. Once we have discussed in detail your wants and needs, we take measurements and some pictures. Next, we head back to sit down and build your design. We then set up a follow-up meeting to present the design to you and your family, where we can make changes right in front of you. Once everything is all set up and details are squared away, we send over the estimate for the presented design. We will work with your budget to create the best landscape for your specific needs. Lastly, we set the install date!

In short, we primarily focus on residential redo and refresh landscaping. We have all the tools, experience and skills available to make your landscaping complete, easy maintenance, and a wise investment.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
In the future, we plan to continue to grow and develop a healthy company, family and community.
