Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaron Contreras.
Aaron, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It has been a long journey. It began back when I was nineteen with a former coach of mine; he gave me my first opportunity, without me wishing to coach to become involved with soccer once more. He asked me to get my coaching license first and then talk to him. Once I had received my coaching license, he asked me to come to one of their practices. Upon arrival, he handed me, ten kids, to coach without instruction and instead free rein to do whatever. He was pleased with the way that I handled the practice that he offered me a coaching position, with a starting team of 6 as well as pay that I had not expected. I remained as one of his coaches for two years and grew to two teams with a total of 25 kids.
After this, I was offered a position with another club, starting with one team of 10 kids. I remained with this club for another two years. The knowledge learned and further experience in a competitive setting resulted in two groups with approximately 40 players. Once those two years were over, I decided it was time to invest in my academy as this had become a dream of mine. We are coming up on our second anniversary of establishing Royal Peal FC, establishing a great foundation that has been blessed to grow to teams ranging from 5 years old to a men’s team that is on the verge of becoming a semi-pro team. With all of this, we have been able to financially support an affiliated soccer club in Mexico, covering groups of similar ages of 5 to adult men. It is allowing them to become a better student-athlete to receive college scholarships.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. It was a tremendous jump from being an employed coach who only worried about coaching the kids to a club president. Who had manage other coaches to manage, soccer field rentals, uniforms, running the club finances, etc. Besides the fact that I was a 25 year old opening an academy who still had a full time job.
Please tell us about Royal Peak FC.
I run a soccer academy. We coach kids mentally and physically to get them to their full potential. We push them to get the most from them both as an athlete and as a student, to reach their full potential in accordance with receiving a full ride scholarship to a college or university and molding their character and moral values to be a great asset to society. The fact that I am most proud of my company is we have a no kid left behind policy, meaning that we offer partial or full scholarships for families who may not be able to enroll their kids into a highly competitive soccer academy.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
In Mexico, the school is different, so when I was in the 3rd grade of Kindergarten, I realize this sounds different, I was five years old. Our Kindergarten team was so good that they invited us to play against the neighboring town’s first-grade team. Surprisingly we ended up defeated them, the best part about that was that a cousin of mine was on that team, the bragging rights against my cousin began there. After winning, we were invited to a tournament in the city, countless amount of great memories that lead me to fall in love with soccer from an early age.
