Meet Terrence Kingbeautiful Todd

Today we’d like to introduce you to Terrence Kingbeautiful Todd.

Terrence, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My journey all started in my art class in elementary school when my art teacher Had us creating friendship bracelets using a braiding technique I loved it so much I then went home and started braiding everything in sight. Then I advanced to braiding all of my little cousin’s hair for school. But at that time, my love was more into the art that I was creating, not so much into the hair. I was more in love with dance and performance art. So being the fact that I’m a “mommas boy” I would always go with my mom to the salon to get her hair done or be at the barbershop with my grandmother who was a master barber and instructor and then that’s when I found my interest in manipulating hair into what I wanted it to do. I would go grocery shopping with my mother and find myself on the book isle reading hair magazines like Black Hair, where there was a section where they had a step by step of certain hairstyles. I would memorize it and go home and try it on one of my cousin’s head and would nail it got to the point that teachers and bus drivers started noticing their hair and wanted to meet the person that’s was creating these styles on their head. So by this time I was 12 years old and my mom told me that I deserve to be paid for the work I was producing on these girls heads And then that when I knew that I had love for hair and visual arts all around .

Moving back to Dallas in 2008 was very hard for me cause all of my clientele was in my home town in Tulsa, Oklahoma and moving to a new city starting from the bottom was a struggle but I was determined to be successful in doing what I loved. I worked 9-5 jobs while trying to build up my clientele I would offer free hairstyles only to be turned down then I started doing my hair and a few drag queen performers hair to be noticed and I stayed focused and kept at it untill I was able to quit my 9-5 job and become a HAIR ARTIST full time. Now I’m steadily busy building my KINGBEAUTIFUL brand I currently have Hair growth oils, wigs, hair collection called KWÉN TRESSES and T-shirts and hoodies that I sale which will be available on my website soon, but until then, you can order through a direct message on my Instagram page @kingbeautiful_hairgod and you can also get my booking info there as well!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth ride, my main struggles was in the beginning tryin to build but I didn’t give up

But this road is and has been full of lessons learned!

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I like to give a lot of the credit to my mother (sherry Todd) for allowing me to be and do what I wanted and supporting me wholeheartedly. I also want to give credit to my lil sister (Lashawnda Todd) and cousins (Latosha, Crystal, Christy, Telisa, Keshonta) who let me practice on their heads and promoted me. Also, my auntie (April Todd) for getting me to use her house in the beginning so much love to these ladies.
