Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Hernandez, creator of Taste of Worth.
Mike, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
This all started with me just starting to post a lot of pictures of really good meals on my personal Instagram. I started doing it more and more and got a lot of good feedback. I kind of felt weird about it, filling my entire Instagram with a picture of food. So, I figured I would go ahead and make an account dedicated to food. I didn’t want it to just be random pictures of food. There are plenty of Instagram accounts that do that. I wanted it to be somewhat helpful and meaningful to people. I love trying new places to eat and have an idea of what those places do best.
So, that’s how the theme of Taste of Worth came to me. I wanted to make an Instagram account dedicated to relatable DFW restaurants and the amazing things they had to offer. I don’t care of the dish is “Instagram worthy”. I just want people to know that this place can make some darn good food, and if you’re looking for ideas of a place to eat, you can come to my profile and get some ideas. I make it a point to tag each restaurant in there and what part of DFW it is so that people can get there. I wanted to have everything from Food Trucks, to a whole in the wall restaurants, to pop-up dinners, and high rated restaurants.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The main obstacle has just been consistency. I wanted to try and do two posts a week, but with a three-year-old daughter, a full-time job, going out to eat at new places and not forcing posts gets hard. Another thing is that I try to stay healthy. In order to do that, I have to cook at home a lot. Not that there aren’t healthy options out there, but it’s just easier for me to control my diet that way. So, I am still learning to balance all those things. I’ll promise this though, any time I come across something worth sharing, I will always make sure to post it.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
The purpose of Taste of Worth, it just to bring awareness of local eateries to local people. I just want to do my part in sharing beautiful and delicious meals from DFW. I want to be a reference point for people to come to find great atmospheres, delicious food, and fun drinks. I make sure and include my email in my account on Instagram because I want people to know they can reach out to me and ask me about these places. I would love to be someone people come to for recommendations for individual dining experiences, or parties as well.
I feel like what sets me apart from others, is that my goal is to always be genuine. I am not looking for discounts and free meals from restaurants. If they wanted to give me early access to stuff, I wouldn’t say no ha ha ha. I just want to share great experiences so that people around DFW can experience them too. This niche seemed to have room for more people based out of Fort Worth, and I am happy to contribute. People should know how much Fort Worth has to offer and doing it from a local FW person’s point of view is something I think is important.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success for me is being able to reach as many people as possible. If people visiting DFW looked to me for advice on must visit dining experiences, that would be a dream come true. Being able to collaborate with others, and gaining relationships through Taste of Worth would also be a point of success for me. I love experiencing food, and being able to talk about it with others who feel the same is important to me.
