Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabrielle Bruner.
Gabrielle, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up in the church, with my mother as the minister of music and my Dad being a bass player in his own band before I was even born, I was never really shy of the music gene. I had grown up learning how to play the piano at the age of five, teaching myself songs by ear and posting covers on Youtube, but it wasn’t until 2016 that I began taking things seriously. I had released my debut EP, “Gabrielle B.”, performed for the first time in my hometown of Oklahoma City, and have kept that momentum going ever since. Following up with a second EP (“Shift”) in 2017, I started figuring out my own sound and honing in on that. With fan favorites like “No One Else (But You)”, “Hold Onto Me”, and my personal favorite, “Free Again”, I knew I had something special.
In September of 2018, I moved to New York and completed my most recent project, “Feel Something”. It is a cry for everyone to simply feel their feelings in a world where, as Nina Simone so perfectly put it in the Intro, “everybody is half dead.” With the success of it’s leading single “Easy” reaching over 80k plays on Soundcloud and the EP itself being mentioned by Bandcamp on their Best Soul List and being Audiomack’s R&B Album of the day, I began to find even more of myself in the music. I recently moved to Los Angeles just last year and am currently working on what could possibly be my debut album.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been easy. Ups and downs are part of the game. It has however been a learning process. I think for any creative, we have our doubts, our hesitations, moments where our perseverance is truly tested, but I think through all that, we discover our true selves. We connect back with our purpose and realize it’s all for a reason. I like to think of mishaps or “mistakes” never as a loss but as an opportunity to learn. Whether it be more about myself and what it is that I want or don’t want or more about what to do and not do when navigating as an independent artist through this industry. I believe it’s easy to get lost. It’s easy to lose sight of what’s important but fortunately for me, I have become my own sound mind and have a team of family and friends who support and keep me grounded every step of the way.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I am an independent R&B singer/songwriter. I write and do all the vocal arrangements on my tracks myself which is something I definitely take pride in. I think my ability to write and communicate what it is that I’m feeling in the form of song is possibly the greatest gift I could have ever been given.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
While I’ve only visited Dallas a couple times, I would assume the community for artists is forever growing as it is in many other states that aren’t major cities.
