Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Addington.
Jason, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up in Blue Ridge, Texas, I began having a love for music by the age of six. By the time elementary school came around, I started writing jagged parts of lyrics from other artists like Eminem and Twenty One Pilots along with some of the lyrics were from myself. In middle school, I found the art form of beatboxing which helped me get more interested in the musical production aspect. I watched videos of street performers and stage performers use unique and intricate sounds that engaged their audience and I was captivated. I performed in talent shows, pep rally’s, and other school events with his newly formed talent that gave him popular school recognition. By the time I was attending McKinney High School, I switched my focus on school and started recording my own rap lyrics and producing my own instrumentals in GarageBand.
At the age of 16, My long time high school friend, Dominic Daniels, Dezeire, created unique instrumentals and lyrics to set us apart from the hip-hop genre. Creating a sub-genre, I tagged as inde-alt hip-hop. In late 2019, I started working with TRND Music to further my musical career as an artist.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Growing up trying to pursue music, it was of course, super challenging. My family didn’t understand how I got the love for music and started wanting me to focus more on school. A ton of my friends back in high school thought I would embarrass myself and waste my own time. I’ve been criticized all over social media and started to be compared to other rappers. Saying that I would never be like Logic or J Cole and how I would always be just a “white boy Soundcloud rapper”.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
In music, I try to stand out more in the Hip-Hop genre. Whether it be through the production of an instrumental or through lyrical storytelling. I always try to come together with my friends and mentors about creating something so unique for an album that would grab people’s attention.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment was reaching and demolishing a personal listening goal on streaming platforms like Spotify. I have a song called “Super Saiyan Jae,” featuring Dezeire that is almost at 200,000 streams on Spotify. My personal goal was at least 5,000 to put everything into perspective. On top of the success of that song, I started gaining more and more fans over social media.
