Today we’d like to introduce you to Austin Cornelius.
Austin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Honestly, I started my journey into music, not as a rapper/singer. At first, me and a few friends and I started a band called PAPERTRAiLS and I was the lead guitarist and occasional vocalist. Unfortunately, everyone having conflicting schedules and only one of us having a car at the time caused the band to not work out. I experimented with all kinds of music at that time but, one genre always kind stuck out and that was rap it was something that I felt I would be good at and I could do it alone, so I bought me a cheap $30 microphone from amazon and went onto YouTube and recorded everything on Audacity. Eventually, I made an EP called “Off The Grid” on SoundCloud, causing a few other artists to add me into their collective and show me how to start taking music a tad bit more seriously. Over the years, I had dropped two other projects, “Everything’s Fine” and “YOUTH,” both experimenting with new sounds and new types of beats.
After dropping “YOUTH” my third EP, I felt as if my music wasn’t good enough and I felt my confidence slipping in my music, so I went on a hiatus for a year. I had dropped a single “Who You Wit” although my friends had received it well. I still wasn’t very confident in my music. I had still worked on the music behind the scenes to see if I could hype myself into making a come back but it wasn’t really working until I dropped “Lost” Featuring Va$h I had found a new sound and a new way I wanted to do my music and over another year or so I had dropped a few singles giving me enough confidence to start performing live at a few open mics such as The Green Elephant and Open EYE. Now I am 22 and working on my 4th Project INFERNO and I’m taking everything I’ve learned over these six years and. putting my all into this new chapter in my music career.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, it has not been a smooth road at all. Over the years, I dealt with a lot of self-doubt and other personal issues such as anxiety and depression, especially being a teenager making music at that time. I never let it stop me but it definitely was a challenge I had to overcome.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I don’t see myself in some special spotlight or anything super crazy I make music to personally ventilate my feelings and hope that someone can listen to my music and just vibe out and compare and contrast what I’ve gone through or just enjoy the content I put out. I also want to take this seriously, so I can feed my family and myself by doing some other than a 9 to 5 job.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Honestly, I don’t think I would ever find a reason to start this over. I think everything that’s happened to me was for a reason and what made my music so great.
