Today we’d like to introduce you to Vamsi Nellutla.
Vamsi, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It all started around May of 2016 when I realized how much of disparity exists with academic knowledge versus what exactly goes in the field especially in Data Science and Machine Learning world. As a strong life-long continuing education supporter, I educate myself going through courses offered through various data camps, universities and MOOC (Mass Open Online Courses) offered by Ivy League universities – but all did not help when I report to my boss on Monday mornings when we discuss a business problem and how exactly Data Science and/or Machine Learning could help in solving the same. That is when I realized my deep understanding of subjects is not helping without actually knowing the “application” aspect of it.
I was with a fortune ten telecom company then and proposed a structured way of doing things -and after viewing successes, I realized I should share this knowledge with other professionals. I started going to meetups and local talks organized by UTD etc. universities – and many after listening requested to start boot camps providing a platform to share my insights on how data science gets done at the workplace, especially the application aspect of this Big Data Science treasured knowledge. With training has been my passion and having trained students earlier on multiple IT technologies for more than a decade, I realized I should start a firm to help local professionals and students – that is when I formed Dallas Data Science Academy.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No major hurdles but considering Data Science and Machine Learning being new technologies although it is in the mainstream media, there were initial doubts from students end – if data science is something they can pursue, and also from professionals – if they need to change their current stream to get into this field and if it would be lucrative, etc. That caused some initial delay in picking up the training and consulting aspect of it. I believe even with all the umpteen social media channels, the best marketing is through word of mouth – when the student is benefited from a program or when professionals feel it was worth it having some value-added that they can take and apply at their workplace the next day.

She progressed with the course and became the first Data Scientist at her company. Success examples like these make me proud and rewarding end of the day.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I have to share this – one time, I had this group of 5 students who finished Master’s in Data Science from a local university and attended our course to get the practical understanding based on their friend’s recommendation. When I opened up one of the complex topics (case in point – building a Deep Learning in Natural Linguistic Processing with advanced Python libraries) and explained in simple terms how we could use it to solve a scenario of doing Speech Recognition of elderly in a senior care facility – they were awestruck. They mentioned that it is the simplest way to understand the topic that made 100% sense. Next, I hear from them is – they went ahead and started a start-up in Austin specializing in NLP related products in Healthcare, especially for seniors. Scenarios like these make me feel incredibly proud, since the end of the day, it is all about using science or any other subject helping humanity and making lives better.
