Today we’d like to introduce you to Trae Mitchell.
Trae, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My name is David Mitchell III, aka Trae the Barber. I’m a master barber from Dallas, Texas. I’ve always had a passion for cutting hair. I started cutting hair in 1998 at the age of 12. It started because my parents couldn’t afford to take us to the barbershop. I was encouraged by my grandfather to pick up the clippers and start cutting hair. The first pair of clippers I picked up were Wahls. I first started cutting my grandfather’s hair (David Mitchell Sr). Then it was off to my brother Joshua. Then it was my father, David Jr. From there, It spread like wildfire. I started cutting hair in my neighborhood. Then it went to middle school, high school and college.
While in college, I bounced around, trying to figure out what I wanted to do. I never really thought of cutting hair as a profession. It was just a side hustle for me. In 2006 I enlisted in the U.S. Army and traveled all over there world. After serving my eight year contract, I decided to get out and tackle barbering full time.
In 2020 I have traveled domestic and international cutting hair and educating. I’ve attended barber battles, trade shows and events all over the United States. I’ve built a major platform for my self independently with no sponsorships.
I graduated from the Dallas Barber College on Forest Ln in Dallas, Texas. After barber college, I decided to move to Austin to start fresh with new terrain. I’ve cut well over 10,000 hours in my life.
Has it been a smooth road?
There were trial and error over the years. It most definitely wasn’t a easy road. It’s all about consistency and believing in your self.
Please tell us about your business.
I’m a master barber. I can cut all types and grades of hair. I can cut men’s and women’s hair. I specialize in Fades and designs. The thing that makes me most proud is the customers walking out feeling like a new person. I pay attention in detail I go the extra mile that the other barbers won’t.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love Dallas. I was born and raised in Dallas. It’s nothing but love. I’ve lived all over the Metroplex. Living in North Dallas, West Dallas, Singing Hills, Carrollton, Richardson, Garland, Plano, etc.
