Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Moon.
Jonathan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started Moon Media out of necessity after losing my job in 2012. I was only 25 years old; I made a lot of mistakes. I was great at my job as a video editor, director, and media producer for a mega-church, but I was really struggling to figure out who I was and how I wanted my life to look. During that time my job took a backseat and it showed. Turns out firing me was the best thing they could have done for me!
I already had a side hustle creating videos for weddings, family stuff, and the small businesses of friends. As soon as I started letting people know on social media that I was available for more freelance work, calls came in. I realized that I could easily replace my income without working for anyone. So in May of 2012, Moon Media was born, and eight years later I’ve never looked back!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It took a couple years for me to start building a client-base and find where my skills were most useful. My opportunities have been diverse and I love it that way! Early on, there was a week where I was filming heart surgery in a hospital and a couple days later, working for CBS Sports at the NCAA Final Four!
I spent the better part of a year trying to break into sports broadcasting and it turned out that I didn’t enjoy it.
I found my way into corporate events and business really started to pick up! I’ve set up huge AV video systems in all of the biggest hotels, convention centers, and arenas in the DFW Area, and filmed and edited videos for large corporations, churches, schools, and universities, etc.
Covid-19 is probably the biggest setback we’ve seen yet because the entire events industry came crashing to a halt. While society is slowly getting back to being comfortable in large groups again, I’m able to focus my production on smaller videos, and streaming for social media. We can shoot and edit video with minimal people involved, filmed in homes or small offices while maintaining social distancing. We can help produce webcasts or livestreams so businesses can have professional-looking video, that’s new and current, client-facing messages reaching customers online.
We’d love to hear more about Moon Media.
Moon Media is a diverse production company, specializing in live video directing cameras for any audience, from big arenas to virtual audiences on Facebook or YouTube. We film, edit, and produce custom video content for businesses, churches, schools, weddings, really any type of media or event you can think of. I’m most proud of having the privilege of filming President George W. Bush and Mrs. Laura W. Bush on several occasions. Special Thanks to Grant Miller Photography, another great Dallas local business, for bringing Moon Media in!
What were you like growing up?
I was a little dork growing up haha! Often the smallest kid in my class (including girls) I did not excel in sports and didn’t really have a desire to. I was not easily overlooked though. I loved to talk, read out loud in class, compete in spelling bees and speech meets. I was intrigued by electronics from an early age. My mom told me if I was held near a light switch as a baby I would flick the lights on and off, and they needed my help programming the VCR when I was about six years old. I wanted to be involved in everything production related from as early as I can remember. I advanced the lyrics slides in church from about ten years old. From Middle School Student Council President to Senior Class President, I was involved in planning pretty much every school dance we had, while also helping do AV for every football game, pep rally, school play and musical. Somehow, I found time to have a job washing windows, and be the Editor of the school newspaper. Overachiever much?
Media Production, video cameras and photography, sound mixing–all of it was clearly what I was born to do and it was only natural I start my own company to help people do just that!
