Meet Cristina Garcia of Makeup by CrisMichelle in North Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cristina Garcia.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Cristina. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My love for makeup began when I was 21. I stumbled onto a makeup tutorial on YouTube and was blown away. After getting the hang of how to glam myself, I was a self-proclaimed and self-taught ‘makeup artist’ working at Chili’s in Abilene TX. I made my way into the FIRST Sephora in Abilene TX when they opened inside a JC Penny. In this position, I was able to gain knowledge of products and brands across the board. Some life changes brought me to Dallas, TX where I began working at the Galleria Sephora. I was In this position for a very short time. I made the transition to Nordstrom for a brand I never heard of, Charlotte Tilbury. After a year in this position, I had a thought as I began to looked towards my future. I wanted to be an independent makeup artist but how? I would continue to work my normal shifts at Nordstrom, and with my kit packed in my car, after work, I’d go to strip clubs. I had no luck in this avenue. In the same timeframe, life took hold of me and blessed me with two babies 13 months apart. I paused on all my makeup ambitions for a bit. Once I was ready to get back into the makeup industry, I chose to freelance for brands. In a matter of two years, I worked for IT Cosmetics, Givenchy, MILK Makeup, and found my way back to Charlotte Tilbury.

After being part of this incredible experience, I learned a few things; how to put myself out there and not fear rejection. How to read potential clients, and MOST importantly, I DIDN’T WANT TO SELL MAKEUP anymore. In this same breath, I had a client that I met through freelancing that flew me out and set me up in an Airbnb in New Orleans. She wanted a little old me to be her makeup artist throughout the weekend of her wedding. This experience blew me away while simultaneously allowing me to see the power of the universe. When I got back, I hit the ground running! I googled and emailed EVERY modeling agency, and news station in the Dallas area I as many photographers, influencers, and just people with a following. My thought process through this was ‘what’s the worst they can say? No? Then I’ll be in the current position I was in. No big deal.’ But that was not the case. In a matter of days, I heard back from Fox 4 news. Their main makeup artist was in his way out and they were looking for a replacement and if I would be able to come in for an interview from the makeup artist who was on his way to bigger things. At this point, I was in disbelief! I interviewed for the position, and GOT IT!!

Mornings at Fox 4 went like glam the team, prep and glam and guests, then dm women to collab. This word ‘collab’ meant different things at different times. Sometimes it meant free work. Tipped based and lastly a discounted price. Consistent content for my Instagram was one of my priorities. I wanted to remain on the potential client’s mind as much as possible. In this space, I worked with photographers, models, influencers, bottle service gals, DJ’s, and hairstylists. Bringing us to here and now. I’m still part of the Fox 4 team as their contracted makeup artist and have a studio space that I love and find so much peace in when I have the opportunity to glam any and every client.

In the future, I see myself as a global makeup artist for an incredible brand. Working NWFW, and glamming up celebs. Until then, I’m taking every day as a blessing and a step forward in the right direction as I manifest and visualize my future while raising my two daughters.

Has it been a smooth road?
On my journey, there were obstacles and struggles.
-this market is saturated, how do I stand out?
– I don’t have much of a following, how do I get Clients to book with me? How will they find me?
– did the time I take off for my children hinder my potential growth in the industry?
– how do I provide for my family in this industry where I’m not a known artist?

Please tell us about your work.
